I applaud CCP for taking the time to implement this! Its a great advance , now you can continue including Spanish translation for the game, according to the internet,It is the second language of the world by the number of people who speak it and also the third language with more Internet users, after Chinese and English.
Just a suggestion...

Color blindness can severely affect the readability of an otherwise great user interface. In EVE, we now would like to improve the UI in such a way that color blind people can adjust the color scheme to their needs.

Check out further details in the latest dev blog Color Blindness support is coming to EVE Online.

You also can check out the beta feature on our test server Singularity. Once you have tested the feature, please support our efforts by replying to this survey. Thanks!

A quick notification: The test server Singularity is currently being updated. As soon as the update is complete and Singularity online again, you can log in and check out the new feature again.

Good - I have had this concern for a long time and I am glad that this is finally being realized. I am not color blind but I know many players who are. Good job - keep up the good work.

CCP Phantom,
thank you and CCP for considering colour vision deficiencies in the design of GUI colour palettes.

One of the biggest positives that can come out of your initiative is to inform the majority of players that about 6% or more of players have some form of colour vision deficiency or actual colour blindness. Very few of the majority understand that it can actually affect gameplay.

I got kicked out of Repo Industries, a wormhole corp, because in part I couldn't use their labour-intensive scanning methodology that forced me to identify the WH class using the subtle colouring and hues of the WH features I scan down.* Something I could not physically do.

Fortunately, my deuteranomaly ( most common specific deficiency IIRC ) doesn't significantly hinder Eve game play elsewhere. My sight is considered "green weak", i.e. my malfunctioning green-sensitive cones have decreased sensitivity to the green area of the light spectrum. Tough to distinguish hues in that part of the spectrum.

The difference in colour brightness helps - Eve often uses colours with strong contrast in brightness which is good.

* TIP for players with a colour vision deficiency/blindness considering a wormhole career:
consider WH corporations that use Vippy AND Vippy's built-in auto-name numbers by static system for wormhole chain mapping and bookmarking. It is designed for quick and time-saving mapping/BM'ing of WH signatures without mucking around.

More importantly, auto-name numbers by static system does NOT require visual class identification on WHs. Vippy is designed and supported BY wormhole pro's FOR WH pro's.

This is good news - or it sounds like good news until you get to the bit that says -

There are a couple UI areas where color blind mode does not work for the time being (most noticeably the scanning 3d scene), but it is our hope we’ll get all those areas covered in the future.

^ This is the main problem I find and I suffer from Protanopia, other parts of the game don't really seem to cause me problems. It it the fact that the scanning screen is black and the icons for the signatures are dark red which makes them very hard to see.

In fact I logged a ticket about this in September (ticket number #268893) -

Quote:
Hello I'm red / green colour blind and I find it extremely difficult to distinguish the red cosmic signature dots within the probe scanner view. They blend into the black background making it extremely difficult to use the probe scanner.

Is there any option to either change the background colour of the probe scanner or change the colour / size of the red dots?

I used to love exploring but now its almost impossible as I can't use the new interface.

I received a pretty nice reply which said that my issue would be raised with the relevant team and that I should also bring it up with the CSM in the forums.

Please sort out the scanning interface for us colour blind users this really is one of the things that really sucks!

I will also test out the new features you have implemented on Sisi and report back using the survey form.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thanks for raising this with us, this is only a first version so unfortunately it doesn't cover everything we'd like. EVE has a number of different system that generate parts of the interface and hopefully we can extend the coverage of this mode as we keep developing it. Buuuuut if you jump on Singularity, give it a shot and submit some feedback through the survey we're using that info when deciding what to do next.

its about time ccp get it together, however they still need to work on our other players who have handicaps and need much attention to the accessibility options they deserve.

get to work and make eve for EVERYONE.

This is something I'm interested in for sure. EVE actually works with a number of accessibility controls and in the customisability of the UI makes it accessible for some disabilities. But I'd definitely be interested in hearing more about where we could improve. If you have some specific examples in mind?

As part of the 8%, I too applaud your efforts to help us out.
I would suggest that you include a link to a site that can help those afflicted identify the nature of their color impairedness so your surveys can be answered with accurate information.

Here is a link to one:

Looking forward to the tests on Sisi

This is a really good suggestion, thanks.

If you're color blind, waaah... you can play eve with just the overview anyways.

Ho ho! Interesting comment from the simply ignorant.

Colour 'blindness' is a fixed genetic mutation that has enabled the survival of the human species.

The original reason I started the KisOver Overview is that I am color blind. I could not tell the green from the red in most over the standard overviews, so I couldn't tell people in my corp from war targets. Which is pretty significant.

Thank you for this. I'll let you guys know what I think once Singularity responds for me.

Oh my... either the person is trolling madly or really is this bad. This 'bad guy' represents why we have large portions of the world where females have no rights in life, why one can be jailed for being a different color or religion and why those who become injured or sick often become targets of hate. The momentum against such can and should be continued. CCP, Thank you for working on the color blind assistance.

CCP thank you. This will help a lot of people enjoy EVE better. I tested it shortly and it seems to improve the game for me. Thank you.

Couple notes:

Please put red/green or blue/yellow after the type of colorblindness, some people don't know which type they are, but they certainly know the colors.

Can you try to not change the current active colors that they can see? The undock button is blue now! :v So take the current spectrum and leave it alone if it is in the normal spectrum.

The module colors are a huge life style change for me, thank you. Changing to blue and yellow, I can see when my module has been selected to cycle off.

Turning on colorblindness mode Deuteranopia makes the number of stacks on a weapon list disappear since it chooses white on Yellow, I think? I was using a light missile launcher just had a yellow bar next to the number of missiles, number not readable.

Rats are yellow! That's certainly a shift. Lol

For the two color, low sec routes are still bluish, which is confusing. I don't know if there is a way to expand more towards the hostile yellows of null sec.

Certainly makes the game a lot more playable for me, thank you! I don't know if I'll change at this point 11 years into my career though, except in extreme cases. I might just remove green, as confusing red and green can be confusing, and there isn't that much green in the overview anyway. Unless all the colors shift as they do right now.

Don't let my critical comments confuse you, thanks for the hard work, I do appreciate it. There are other games like Paths of Exile where it is basically unplayable at a high level because I can't tell the differences between sockets and gems.

Its good that you are FINALLY doing something about this issue - gods only know its been raised enough times here & by CSM.

I suspect that you'll find most of the colour blind vets (I'm not colour blind) need some "inducement" to contribute to your tests as they've got used to the colours they see now (hello Deran Lol ).

Everyone else who's been colour blind buggered off long ago - taken you all far too long to accommodate nearly 10% of your potential customers - especially the ones who wanted to PvP, you try sorting out an overview which works when its pretty much 99% murky shades of the same "colour" Sad

Don't take it personally CCP The Funk, I'm happy someone is finally doing something but CCP as a company has been totally "blind" to the problem forever Blink Its cost them a lot of cash over the years but I guess it didn't land on the :awesome: list at the meetings.....

I played around with the settings and would feel better if we have the option of selecting the replacements instead of replacement scales. Perhaps use the scale for maps/UI stuff but allow us to pick and choose overview/inspace colors.

First impressions: enemy red box now looks yellow box, enemy NPC were yellow, the enemy ewar icons became some weird shade. Highly confusing.

What I prefer to do is eliminate as much of the crap as possible and make important things visible to me. I.e:

Current Overview Settings

If it were possible, i would make friendly NPC black, enemy stay the current color. Yellow box be white, and red box be dark yellow or slightly lighter red.

There are so many forms of color blindness it would be easier to let us pick and choose and it would add value to normal players also.

Awesome. For a game based on colours this is going to be a game changer for me being colour blind. No longer trying to look for red dots on a black background which is almost impossible. Thank you for implementing this.

I expect to get this post deleted or locked. So much for freedom of expression.

While I'm not affected, this is still very good news. +1 to CCP and some additional likes to CCP The Funk for caring.

+1 for the effort to CCP.

Arline Kley wrote:
Just a question really: Now that the Colour Blind mode is being developed, will the original UI colour sliders come back for those without?

And +1 to that, with a -8 for CCP.

The ability to pick any color to various GUI objects is something that is badly missed, as the crappy static options it was replaced with suck. A "feature" no one wanted or needed, and was done for no apparent reason.

Especially the possibity to really change the overall base "tint" of the base UI color. Now it's all just kinda weak greyish.

Thank you for implementing this feature, it has already made my life much easier.
Also, thank you for allowing me to customize the feature and not rely on presets.

A few suggestions:

1) Please consider expanding the different color scheme to the bookmark folders so system bookmarks pop out more at the user.
2) Replace the red sig sphere in the scanning map with a different color (for those of us with red/green issues)

and a question:

what is supposed to happen when a user saves an overview in one setting, e.g. Deut and that setting is imported into a user with no custom color blind mode?
