Questions about ice belt rat

Hi guys,

Recently, i plan on training to fly an endurance to mine ice, the training would take almost a month, so i want to clear a few questions before spending a month to train. I have already google and have no luck finding any updated answer.

So here are my questions,

1. Do rats spawn on ice belt in N sec?
2. Can endurance kill N sec rats with just 3 drones?
3. If endurance cannot solo kill N sec rats, is that equal to endurance being unable to solo ice mining in N sec?

Thanks for any reply in advance

Depends on your drone skills but I think they should be able to kill them. If not you can also probably sig tank them by orbiting the rock with an AB. You can lookup any site on evesurvival, if they don't web/scram you will probably be fine.

Thank you.
That means it would be best if i first cloak up and then search whether the ice belt rat proceed the ability to web/scram, if not i can speed tank them. If the rats can web then i will have to leave. It seems that solo ice mining is not efficient enough to justify the risk of working in N sec.

It depends what you are mining and how far it is from wherever you plan to use/sell the ore. There are some nul areas near to high sec that could give you a quick turn around time. But I think you may want to consider lowsec, there are actually plenty of quiet low sec systems which will offer you a balance of rarer ores and easier access to trade hubs. Also you could use the stealth cloak version and go into WH space to huff gas. A full load of gas can fetch twenty null. For gas sites in kspace sleepers spawn after fifteen or so minutes which allows you to ninja mine and warp out when they spawn.

I haven't tried it myself, but nullsec anoms spawn BS rats, and I dont think the endurance will be able to take those on solo. Sure, you might be able to speed tank, but the DPS might be too low to break their tank.

Alternatively, try the Proc/Skiff. These guys are tanky, and a full set of drones will be able to make quick work the npc BS.

Thank for your comment, but Proc/Skiff cannot cloak which i believe is the key element to survival as a solo miner in L/N sec, there are just so many pvpers all around the universe.

The facts that rats can web really nullify speed tanking and is really a bad news for me. Im sure rats in N sec can web, but i dont know the rats in L sec, if L sec rats cannot web, i will certainly go ice mining there even though the profit is lower.

Having to deal with the risk from rats and pvpers, is really challenging and interesting.Lol

Just do some scouting first, set up bookmarks on various rocks in different belts as well as safe spots and when a rat or PvP ship shows up, warp out. Go to safe spot and cloak up if it's a PvP ship or go to another rock in a different belt if it's a rat ship.

The trick is to stay aligned.
Alternatively, go in and get friendly with the locals. Providence space is famous for allowing neutrals fly through and operate in their systems (as long as they are not KOS)

Also never checked the endurance but ice blocks are 1000m3 can you fit thst? Also i do not think they can fit an ice miner would need a drone.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post

Endurance is an expedition frigate whose main purpose is to mine ice.

@OP
1. Yes.
2. Almost certainly not, my Procurer struggles with 5 bonused lights.
3. You might be able to kill small things and speed tank. Usually rats don't web or scram (although some elite frigates do).

I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

This is the final nail in the coffin of solo ice mining. If i have to warp out when rats spawn, then im better WH ninja gas harvesting.

Guess it would be best for me to keep training my exploration skill

You can easily solo Ice mine, just do it in HS..And before anyone comes on and says they're all mined out in minutes with mega fleets, rubbish. Where I Ice mine I can easily spend an hour with 2 accounts dropping off the ice in a local stn to pick up later..

If you're considering Null, you'll need better skills than it looks like you have, or join a corp and mine where others are for protection from the rats, or you could mine alone and yell for help..but don't do it every 10 mins, your corp mates would get fed up with having to come and bail you out all the time.

Solecist Project...." They refuse to play by the rules and laws of the game and use it as excuse ..." " They don't care about how you play as long as they get to play how they want."

The downside to mining ice and having to warp out is that you need to complete one full cycle to get a chunk of ice. Meanwhile while gas and ore mining, you can cancel your cycle mid-way and still get the equivalent m3.

I would look at joining a nullsec corp, or mining in Providence. I used to run a Procurer with 5x Acolyte II in Provi, and could take on 2 BS rats at once in a belt without warping off. Procurer was rigged for EM and Therm damage resists. Anything more than that, I would need to warp out.

Thanks for pointing out that

Just operating in null sec in general typically is something that you do with friends. If you want to ice mine in null sec then ideally you'd want to join a corp that is active in null sec and has some systems that they defend and keep relatively safe. You mine in groups and have some arrangement for getting the ore / ice products to market or a decent local market.

Eve is a true MMO in that the Devs intentionally design the game to encourage group efforts and punish solo play. Yes there are plenty of things you can do solo to make decent isk but the focus of the game is around group efforts and I would recommend that instead of trying to find out what you can do solo that you invest more effort into finding a group that fits your playstyle.

Tried join a 100 men corp, but im at UTC+8 time zone where only a few corp mate can are still playing when im available. Joined 2 weeks and not even one mining fleet operation available to me. Just quit because its like solo play in a group and the HQ is too far from Jita which has the best demand and price of ore.

1. Yes rats spawn in null sec Ice Belts
2. You will be hard pressed to kill rats with 3 drones only. I am able to send 5 T2 light combats at a target and can kill rats as large as a battleship, but only if they are less than 700K bounty.
3. I wouldn't let any responses, included mine, to talk you out of trying the Endurance in Null Sec Ice Belts.

Give it a try, loose a ship or 2. You may find a way to make it work!

I dont mind losing a ship or 2, because endurance is just 25m fully fitted. What i do really care is that i absolutely dont want to spend 30 days training skills that yield even less than high sec mining.

if there is threat from players, i can choose to mine in quiet system for the cost of more jumps.
However, if i cant handle the ice belt rats, i will have to move from site to site constantly and unlike ore belt which there are plenty at every system, ice site is only present in certain system, if one is compromised, i will have to move a long way to find another one and i dont think mining this way can even yield higher than high sec mining.

Ya I'm GMT - 6 so I can't help you too much with advice on activity during your time zone's prime time. All that I can say is keep looking because the game gets better when you find a group active during your prime time.

I still would say that joining the public chat channels of a perspective corp is a great way to find out how active they are before you join up. You could join 20 public chat channels from 20 different corps and just go from tab to tab while you play and see who is active. This also has the added benefit of giving you many channels with vets that are eager to help you.

Never thought about that, it seems a good idea. I just wonder will there be a public channel for most of the corps and the majority of the corp will join that public channel. iirc, most of the corps use out of the game communication and only a few representatives join public channel for diplomatic issue or else.
