Black Screen Launcher Issue (and workaround)

o/ all

Had an issue on my Windows 7 laptop where the launcher would load only a black screen, as well as the settings menu and x.

I attempted the fix on the official support page which was to add a system variable called QT_OPENGL and set the value as either desktop, angle or software.

angle and software did nothing for me, and desktop caused the launcher to crash when initiated.

After trawling through older threads I found that it's a render issue and played around with some settings. The fix is as follows:

Go to your EVE Launcher location (C:\EVE\Launcher)
Right click on the launcher application and go to Properties
Go to the "Compatibility" tab
Select "Run in 256 colours"

Your computer will now look like it's straight out of windows 95, however the launcher will load. This will let you login your accounts and update the launcher. Once in you can revert the settings.

This isn't really a proper fix but more of a last resort workaround.

It would be helpful for devs to add this to the current support page - so that other people having the same problem have a chance to play.

Make sure your desktop isn't set to 16 bit graphics.

Did not you think to move to QT5.8 instead QT5.7?
https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-51892

Quote:
I confirm on my side, the black screen is only available on Qt5.7 not Qt5.8, I hope the not just a QT_OPENGL_BUGLIST exclusion of my card.
If the resolution is confirmed, a pass around the several card defined under OpenGL Buglist is necessary to remove other opengl issue resolution thanks to the new implementation.

Good evening,

EVE Launcher revelaed a problem that's probably known for pretty much everyone, including devs. It got stuck on a state that kept it completely white except the menu, where 'Settings' and other submenus can be accessed, the minimize and close buttons.

I searched for a way to solve it and nothing worked apparently. I even reinstalled the game from scratch and it still didn't work. I even tried changing the color scheme to 256 colors, because somsone else tried that and worked for him/her... However, it didn't work at all for me.

There's a topic that has a dev saying "keep the launcher setting to 'Release'" because, according to the dev in question, its the most stable and problem-free launcher version available... Ok, its perfectly understandable why it should be left there... However, I managed to put the launcher working properly by changing that paricular setting from 'Release' to 'Development'...

... Feels like the development version is the 'Release' and not the other way around... Go figure.

EDIT: Reverted back the setting to 'Release' and the launcher stopped working again, reverting to that white screen locked state again. Changed the setting to 'Beta' and the launcher is working again. Devs better take a look, or I might start solving the launcher problems ahead of them.

I'm not able to reproduce this affect on my machine, the release version works fine on mine. Try deleting the launcher cache folder and see if that resolves it.

* Please press the windows key + R to open a run window.
* Copy and paste the following into the run window and press enter.

%LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\cache\QtWebEngine

* Right click on the folder named 'default' and delete it.
* Start the launcher and see if the issue persists.
