It’s bad enough losing a ship worth a few billion…..but when your ship costs more than the PC you are playing the game on, its all a bit absurd.

This right here sums it up for me. If you need a “must” ship or fit to be taken seriously youre not in the right circles.

That there are players who play like that is entirely true. In the end, it depends on who you choose to be in Eve.

Only skill I have literally never trained in my game play since 2003. I have zero practical need to train it for myself. Have I used them? Sure, but I refuse to train them…. 387mil SP later.

You eventually hit this ceiling where you understand every aspect of the game well enough to decide for yourself what is worth your time, and what is most enjoyable. Many years in the game don’t guarantee that a player has walked the meta path forwards as outlined by OP. That path was not for me.

I’ve increasingly found larger ships far more restrictive. My Machariel can only use autocannons or artillery. Lots of DPS but a slow ship with not that good scan resolution. In fact I got fed up with the sniper version and changed it to shorter range and better tracking. But even that is simply not worth the extra cost over and above a nifty little Navy Augoror that may only have 2/3 of the DPS but has way better tracking, far higher speed, can fit two neuts, and so on….and is just 1/8 of the price.

I also started wondering why I ever bought a Vargur. It may have really high alpha, but….most of the time you never have all that alpha actually apply. And you have an absurd cycle of 22 seconds or so. Whereas my Loki, with 1/3 of the alpha, applies way more of that more often…seldom gets ‘misses’ or ‘grazes’, has less than half the cycle time ( which actually means I get 2/3 of the Vargur alpha in the same time period )…and it is well under half the price.

Vargur is really just a glorified Tornado, and costs 10 times a Tornado but is not 10 times better. And that’s the thing in EVE….the better-ness of most large ships is not pro rata to the extra cost.

Noobs want bigger ships…but after a while you realise that the biggest ships are not necessarily the best.

Agreed.

I have 15 alts, only three of them can fly anything bigger than a cruiser, while half a dozen of them can fly everything cruiser and smaller. HACs are my hull of choice for the best blend of tank, speed, and firepower.

That’s how it is with most things in life. To get that extra 2% you’re gonna be paying extra 2000%. I have Naim Audio components in my sound system. And they are definitely better than regular consumer market stuff. But the improvement to sound quality that they confer is maybe 2-3%. I can detect it at least. Guys with lesser hearing won’t. I don’t know how much Naim costs these days but back when I bought mine it was 3000 eur for something that you could get for 150 eur when you shopped on the regular market.

In EVE examples, officer stuff is prime example. Those things will give you extra 2% in some benefit (some more, some less). But be willing to pay extra 1000% or more for them.

The problem is that you are paying that for a few percent better odds of survival. If you go from a 50% chance of survival to a 52% chance of survival, really you are just piling up extra loss cost for the 48% of time when you lose. I’ve seen ships so blinged out that they are more than double the cost of the same ship that I fly….yet they clearly don’t confer double the survival chance in combat.
