and then you did.

But guess what, my revival turns out to be good. Yes, I became aggressive when I shouldnt have. However, there seems to be renewed interest in the topic, eh?

With that being said, despite the apparent argument about whether raw ore in real life is graded in a similar way (it is, i’ve shown proof multiple times.) I am now interested in Why it bothers some of these folks?

Purely from a roleplaying perspective, miners tend to be in the economy as well as their mining. Having an easier way to discern which is better, should help the budding billionaire. Miners also tend to be in industry, which would mean the characters, anyway, are very much into the science part of the game.

Having a standard grade system for the density of minerals in the various rocks, that the characters cant even see and only has information coming from scans, should be a better method, no? Standardizing any industry related objects would only benefit people, no?

Unless these people are the ones building ships that blow up on undock, and are mad that they can’t pass off sub-standard products for the same price as standard products? The jist being, this is a video game universe, not real life. Our characters exist in a place where science is far more advanced, and doesn’t need archaic layman names for rocks in space.

From a real life perspective, the standardized names make the bar for incoming players a little easier. How is that a bad thing? I’ve seen terms like" “dumbing it down”, but that is really just saying they don’t like or want new players to come in and not struggle as hard as many of us did 5,10,20 years ago or a little longer.

I saw that immediately. That causes me anger, because I love this game and I want to see it continue for another 20 years. Assuming I live that long. How could anyone that has been playing for any length of time not love this game and want it to continue?

This mentality has existed for a long time, all across the gaming consumer base. I (the angry about new players existing person) struggled when this game first came out, why shouldnt players coming in after (x number) years later also struggle like it’s still the early 2000’s game!?!

If the new players are expected to struggle the same ways we all did, then they should also have new lowsec and null space that older players can’t claim. They should also have the same economy from back then. But that wont be argued for by any of these folks.

I know there will be argument about this, so please explain to me how making the bar of entry lower, for slightly easier access to more players a bad thing? No company exists that does not want or need continued income. Video games are not free. Development, servers, insurances etc, all cost money. Electricity isnt free.

The subscription cost was raised due to loss of income. As people age and find other things to do, money stops flowing. The more people drop off, the less money being spent. Again, video games arent free. Whether anyone likes it or not, this game needs new players. I need new players, since I play and would like to keep playing. I dont know if you actually play, or you’re just another forum rat that hasnt played in a decade. Let’s assume you do play. You need new players, if you also want this game to continue existing.

Small changes like this, should not cause an issue.

I should also point out, that many of the players that came in early, are now also decades older, which means they have less time and money for this game, assuming they went out and made a career for themselves, or got married and are raising children.

also, I am prepared for the argument that what I’m saying is wrong, and that these folks arent hiding their sentiments about struggle and being new behind shallow arguments. I’ve seen it over dozens of games, from hundreds of people. This isnt a new thing.

I think as always there are different aspects to it. First for a professional miner the introduction of different ore compositions with names was welcomed because there is more in a belt. But it serves no purpose for the selection of the ore. Miners will either use scanners or take the whole belt anyway and not select by ore names. At least i don’t, because being picky and flying around leads to downtime of your mining operation that is not compensated by the gained value of the ore.

Also i did a litte more research on the topic and we are both right. It depends on the viewpoint of the grading if you give a new name for a variety or if you grade it with classes.

- **Mineral Variety:** Naming often distinguishes varieties within a species, which affects their grade and value. For example, Ruby and Sapphire are varieties of Corundum, distinguished by color, which immediately implies a higher value (grade).
- **Economic Grade:** In mining, the “grade” refers to the concentration of a valuable mineral within ore, such as “high-grade” vs. “low-grade” copper ore.

If we set that all aside, then for me it comes down to an unneeded change that feels like dumbing down the game - at least for me. And this has happened a lot in EVEs past. Iconic things i liked got removed or changed - no point in going into that as it would significantly derail the thread. A lot of immersion was patched out of the game for seemingly no reason, so whenever i feel that a change is going into that direction, i speak out, because sometimes it feels like whoever is developing the game doesn’t play it or they would have not changed stuff in the way they do.

From my experience across dozens of games, and i don’t even know how many hundreds of players saying the first part about the game they’re playing that has aged; Dumbing it down, has always, with no variation meant making old grinds easier for new players.

It happens all the time, even now you could go into mining chat, my little rat hole of psychopaths \<3, and ask about say, World of Warcraft, and someone will say the same phrase, with the same meaning i mentioned. If it’s not about microtransactions, which is a valid issue to an extent, older games get this treatment.

“Back in My Day, we had to struggle for X,Y,Z, and even though (X) number of years has passed since then, and the entire gaming industry and consumer base has changed a lot, new players should also struggle!

However, I have suggested this on multiple game forums previously, if you’re to expect the struggle from 20 years ago for new players in the current consumer base, they should also get their own lowsec, nullsec and economy from back then, that can’t be touched by older players, at all. As in,

![ban-hammer-yoshi](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/eveonline/original/4X/8/1/b/81bd04bcd19df2956ea2514f7d7ace50432b640c.gif)

for Any player that isnt brand new trying to use new alts to touch said protected zones. If that isn’t the baseline for bringing new players in, which it wouldnt anyway, then we need to stop with the dumbing down statements.

This game especially, is exceedingly technical, which does not appeal to the vast majority of the video game consumers. That means, for this game to continue to exist, that needs to change. No, I do not have any PhD written papers to back up that statement, I merely have to look at the number of daily players to know this is an extremely niche game in its current form.

I love this fact, to be quite frank. The position this game holds, and the technical aspects that intimidate potential new players to the point of looking elsewhere, is also a Multispectrum Shield Hardener II.

The company that runs this game can’t afford for that shield hardener to be trained at level 5 skill anymore. Long time players are aging, have careers and families. Sadly some have passed into the hands of Amarr Jesus.

We, the surviving players, need to make intentional concessions with these changes, so that we can continue to play this game that i believe we all love.

Edit: i have not suggested that other games give new players lowsec, nullsec, or the older economy as that is specific to this game. I meant to say that I have suggested similar situations in other games about older everything for newer players.

The “Multispectrum Shield Hardener II” did indeed suffer from dumbing it down or “consistency” measures or whatever you may call it as it was known for 17 years as “Adaptive Invulnerability Field II”.

It was put out of existence just short of coming of age. I felt a great disturbance that day, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

As for training - has been dumbed down also: from time to time i do new accounts and todays new players can leverage as much headstart as they wish. They can easily jump about 5 years ahead in terms of skillpoints. Learning has become irrelevant with the advent of skillpoint trading. It is now money bound - ingame money or real money. You can’t tell strategically by time anymore what some might be able to do or not. Skillpoints have become totally irrelevant. If you need them for something you either buy them directly or retrain them. The whole concept is dead now. Also you can’t be proud of having all learning skills to 5 anymore - they were also removed existence long before the skill trading to ease up for new players. Today they could be in the game again as after skillpoints have been made tradeable it is again irrelevant if you’d have to pay for those 3 months also or not.

List goes endlessly on. As said above, better not discuss it. I also know that you meant it figuratively, but somehow managed to exactly hit affected stuff.

I saw this person in system “Gallente Citizen” followed by a very long number. When I did a search, it turns out there are over 500 characters called “Gallente Citizen” and all of them have long 9 to 10 digits long after their generic name. You know what this means don’t you?

It means there are a lot of developers with no imagination whatsoever playing here. The game allows for random name generation and yet they need to be overtly generic.

Might as well, since they have no plans to revert this bad decision. Why not make some more bad decisions?
I lost count is Salvage XXXI the Hyperbolic Metatransistor Array or not?

@Lusty_Lucy_Cybaritic

I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong about this, but my understanding is this, generic character names, such as you describe, i.e., “Gallente Citizen” followed by a string of random numbers, are pilots whose original name was deemed offensive, and so was removed by CCP and slapped with the name you see “Gallente Citizen…”.

When I started, lol, ages ago, I suppose I’d describe it as a badge of shame, depending upon your outlook. The name you picked for your character was socially unacceptable, and you got slapped with the generic version. My interpretation was…it was like a prisoner number, and that renaming warned some corps off recruitment, and probably for some corps it proved attractive.

Personally, I found it inventive, given the circumstances (as I understood it.)

I cannot remember what I was told about the possibility for renaming such a character.

I do realize this post is off topic, and may be reported as such.

Yes. That is what I heard as well. But the information came from another player, not CCP directly. I don’t think anything stops a player naming their characters like that either.

There are also ‘Caldari Citizen’, ‘Minmatar Citizen’, and probabaly ‘Amarr Citizen’ characters like that as well. Although I’ve never seen the latter ones.

There have been cleaning processes of unused characters carried out to make names available again from time to time:
