Greetings,

So after 11 years running on windows 10, I’m at the point where I need a new PC and some advice on buying a new one from you guys.

I’m starting to get some weird glitches and can’t force an upgrade to windows 11 because my cpu is to old…17 skylake 6700.

So I need some advice on a new PC please. Is it worth waiting on DDR6? If i’m reading stuff correctly, then this time next year this should be available however my brother is telling me it will be very expensive, I need a pc set up that will last another 10 years playing Eve.

What are your thoughts?

Well, it depends on a budget 1st and foremost, and then how time sensitive are you. Waiting forever for something better to come, is not really a recipe for success in today’s market. If you have money to splurge, get shiny things, if you don’t, then don’t force new stuff for the sake of it.

TBH, I kinda wish I did NOT go with ddr5 last winter, it’s just pita to deal with… slow boots, always issues with sticks etc. I had to go down to 64gb, because 128 was just unstable af (kinda made money on this, because we know how ddr market went XD) My old ddr4 machines are fine and play EVE fine, so does m1 mac, and there’s almost no game that actually requires latest gen hw, because no one owns it anyway, so devs would be suicidal to make something that’s not crisp on something like 3060 (or even older).

I think 10 years is a long time to plan for. A lot can change in a decade.

I also think you posted this in the wrong subforum and it should probably be moved.

To your question, though, unless you plan to do some serious multiboxing, EVE is not hugely resource-intensive. Unless that changes, I expect that if you put together a mid-range gaming rig today, it would probably be good for at least five years and perhaps longer. No need to break the budget, if the goal is just to run EVE (other games may need much more).

As an example, the gaming rig I have today is a Ryzen 5 3600X with 64GB of DDR4 RAM, RX 590 graphics, and NVME storage. I built that machine five years ago, using fairly mid-range specs. It still runs two EVE clients at max settings without breaking a sweat, and I expect it will probably last me another five years or so.

Note however, I mainly play EVE, Valheim, and a few older games. There are a number of modern games (e.g., Windrose) that my machine simply can’t handle. Five years ago, it could run pretty much any game on the market.

EDIT to add: Point being, if it’s just for EVE, probably any mid-range spec will do. If you want to spec out today to run whatever latest game comes out for the next 10 years… well… good luck.

Yeah, eve runs on potatoes… The setup you have here, could run Admiral’s 30 alts if you put it on memory optimized, and still have reserve for couple looters 🙂

Yup. And that machine didn’t even break the bank five years ago! 😆

Hi, thanks for your input everyone, food for thought.

I would say that my budget is not a problem. My wife would like to play the latest horror games as a bonus.

Can someone advise if an I7 skylake 6700 from 10 years ago can be forced to upgrade to windows 11 to address the glitches I’m having? I’m struggling to get it to accept a TPM 2.0 and then upgrade!

My future proof machine from 2015 is still running, and has been running Windows 11 on a i7-4790 since January when my Windows 10 self destructed. Memory it’s 16 GB of glorious DD3 and my graphics is a GeForce GTX 960 with “4” GB (it was 3.5+0.5, but whatever, never bothered me).

So, can you i7 run Windows 11? I think the answer is yes. Just, don’t update. Install from scratch, backup all your data and install as if the machine was empty. I can’t advise you on how to do this because it was made by the people at the repair shop, but I have no TPM running (what game does even require it?) and also they installed Open Shell which makes my Windows 11 at home way more comfortable to use than the ones at my job.

As for future-proofing, this is a must visit:

My machine was a “Outstanding” level in 2015 and here we are. I am thinking about a replacement because the hardware is getting physically old after 11 years and I expect that the burst of the AI bubble will have hardware manufacturers scrambling to empty their stocks of memory, so maybe next year we’ll have a buyers’ market for PC gaming and I can go big… with an exception: I don’t need 4K. My screen is as much large as it will ever be and I don’t always can tell the difference between its native 2k panel and a 1k image on it…

And once you forget about 4K, the GPU market is your beetch. I plan on running cold, thus AMD all the way, no way I’m dumping 1 kW worth of heat at my place… 🙄

AFAIK, it’s not officially supported but it does run. You have to use rufus or similar, to burn install image that has `BypassCPUCheck`and/or `AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU` flags set, then it will go through. No guarantee that will solve your particular glitches though, as it’s not evident where they come from. If hw, then it may just crash/glitch differently, but still crash or glitch ☹
