So, here’s an idea: On August 27th, 1957, Robert Brownlee designed a nuclear test that blew a manhole cover (most likely) into space - the fastest man-made object ever. Commonly known as traveling at a speed of “Mach F\*\*k,” it has been joked and theorized that the manhole cover is still traveling through space… so what if, on August 27th, CCP creates a mini event that celebrates that?

I think this could be way cool.

While it may be cool, it’s a tad bit early. 😁

New Eden is so far from the Milky Way that they didn’t know where it was before the New Eden Wormhole collapsed. That means it’s billions of light years away from Earth, at the closest, and it hasn’t even been fifty thousand years since the event.

Still a better love story than that Doctor Who thing they tried. I’m game…

Who is to say the manhole cover wasn’t attracted by the gravity from the EvE Gate, pulled into it, and now it’s on a yearly orbit around the cluster? It’s just been too small to notice… until now.

Ah, the story changed since I read it almost twenty years ago.

It’s only been 25 thousand years.

As for who’s to say? Probability does. Even if we assume the Eve Wormhole was open from the time the cover was launched until the wormhole’s collapse 8,000 years later, this cover is traveling much less than the speed of light, and therefore actually wouldn’t have gone that far before the gate collapsed. The speed of light is 670,616,629 mph, so there’s just no possible way that cover was propelled to even 1% light speed, and in the 8,000 years between its launch and the collapse of the wormhole, wouldn’t have even made it as far as the closest star to us.

I do, however, thank you for the thought experiment in whether or not it could be possible. It was fun working this out. 😀

I’ll even settle for that Tesla that Elon launched into space a few years ago. Wonder where that is now…

I’m still laughing that this exists. 🤣

All I did was google when it launched, and this was the first link.

Edit: While I was looking, I googled the Escape Velocity of the Solar System. The manhole cover was definitely traveling fast enough to leave the solar system, but the Tesla is in an orbit now.

I love that Elon does stuff like that. Maybe he can put a Cybertruck on Mars next. I mean, it already looks like a rover anyway…

I’m pretty sure we have better technology to gather our trash on another planet than taking a Cybertruck. We have much more decorative dumpsters at our disposal.

I’m not entirely sure that Elon wasn’t an original EVE developer. The first Caldari ships looked like they were designed by an autistic toddler using Legos.

I read that the manhole cover vaporized (sorry to be the kill joy). Still a neat story, though.

It was theorized that it was vaporized, but it was only caught on a fraction of a frame. I still believe. 😛

I want to believe as well! The irony is that the first alien invasion of Earth could be brought about by said manhole cover striking an alien craft approaching a fraction of the speed of light…

The author of the original report amended it in 2016. He claims to have gotten the math wrong originally, and it was likely moving too fast for friction to matter as it traversed the atmosphere in milliseconds.

Unlike things coming in, there’s less air resistance as you go up.
