There’s plenty of examples of people who see any criticism as a personal attack meant to insult, demean and ridicule; they’re generally the same people who don’t adhere to the standards they hold others to. ---

@Archer_en_Tilavine While it’s sort of off topic. It’s been scientifically studied and “proven” for a given definition of proven that mental harm from insults is a real thing and does cause physical harm in the body. Just to link it back this explains why moderation is important to have, as stressors like insults do have real effects. ---

Does ganking someone’s mission-running Tengu also result in mental harm that causes physical harm in the body? Because I feel that if that’s the case, and we make the argument that we’re not allowed to be mean to people in-game or on the forums verbally, we _definitely_ shouldn’t be allowed to PvP other players unless they consent to it. ---

Implicitly by playing EVE you consent to normal gameplay events happening such as PvP. However the forums (& even the game chat itself) have rules against certain things which means you haven’t consented to those things happening to you on the forums. Yes, something you consent to can end up causing you harm, even if it stays inside the limits of that consent, but in that case the onus is more on you to find a way forward, not on the other person. In the context of consent, Moderation is the process for enforcing the consent boundaries & the process for breaches of consent. (To keep it topic related :P) ---

Sorry, I’m just not buying it. Just because someone consents to being shot, doesn’t make that act of violence any less legal. Imagine I give you a gun and beg you to blow my brains out; would you do it just because I “consent” (even if, let’s assume, you actually _wanted_ to do it)? Probably not, since you would go to jail for it, because killing someone is a criminal act. Likewise, if talking trash to someone, or blowing up their space pixels, causes _actual_ physical harm to a person, that would necessarily become an illegal, possibly criminal act. So either the research is not valid, or many of us should be serving life sentences right now. ---

But, to extrapolate the idea, there are some end of life laws in various countries where you are allowed to assist someone in dying. However yes, mental harm is ‘new’ in the western world in being recognised as a real thing, I say ‘new’ as historically it has been recognised at various intervals by various cultures but in the modern age we’ve downplayed it heavily or ignored it. And a lot of what has been let happen in the past probably shouldn’t have been let happen and should be taken more seriously. This isn’t to say that we can’t do jokes etc, the forums set limits and pretty clearly state to my reading that there will be some rough & tumble on them inside those limits, so by using the forums you are saying that you can handle having your ideas called dumb & stupid etc. But it does mean that the moderation limits are there for important reasons. ---

I’m surprised Bartsylody didn’t stop Aurora from activating the feature first - can you imagine the moderation load that would have to go into moderating public post revisions where changes can be made by different people of a post originally posted by someone else? As if moderating posts wasn’t challenging - and controversial - enough as it is… ---
