True, that’s about the global value as it’s based upon the drug trade, human trafficking and other shady stuff.

I was kinda predicting on the small effect of the super bowl advert, because the best investment decisions are when you are drunk. And people will probably go in, realize they made a mistake and then either go out or just hope for the next wave of greater fools to release them. 😉

Ok, so your whole knowledge about the topic and the following comments is based on things you searched just now on google. Good to know.

> But since no one “owns” it, not sure what he’s going to do, lol, you guys. The more I know about it the more ridiculous the scam looks.

It’s an open source project under the MIT license. It doesn’t really matter who owns it or thinks is “in charge”. I can change the program myself if I want, the only important thing is how any of this changes make it to the running network. So there are like ~100k nodes running that make up the Bitcoin network. Every single one of this nodes checks the rules encoded in the program that all can see. Those nodes don’t get automatically updated, there is no mechanism for that.

If you or I or “the chosen” developer would change the rules in the code, all he would do is kick himself out of the network because of the different rules it would create a new fork only that one node is on, completely pointless. In order for the changes to actually have an impact he would have to make sure a big majority of those 100k nodes accept the changes and deploy the changed program.

Just as an example, there where some “biggest updates in Bitcoins recent history” last November. It was a relatively uncontroversial addition of a new type of addresses that increases privacy and smart contract capabilities and a new algorithm on top. It took years to get this into the shape so there is a good chance the network will accept it and actually update, and this is a completely backwards compatible change that does not change any rules.

So the answer is, everyone together is in charge, or better: everyone together is making sure no one actually is.

Dude, I will still attend other people’s funerals although I didn’t die yet. I hope no one finds out. Right?
I will caution people about the dangers of AIDS. I can do that without getting to experience it first, lol.

You assumed it, but assumed wrong.
You are wrong because he was not in crypto, has was in a general pyramid scheme, albeit slightly with a tracker and “digital wallet”. It was to explain the difficulty of saying people they made a mistake and will probably have to cut their losses.

See, it’s not a scam people, MIT is involved, you know, don’t look up where [Gavin Andresen - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Andresen) worked. lol. And how that front went bankrupt, it’s all part of the shadyness. Dude, I just linked you it one post ago.

No, only a few develop around it. Or tell me that every investor -like Obama said- “learned to code”? They might need it right?
No, only a few groups have large farms. Or tell me that it’s different, just scroll up because I already posted this above.

You add a lot of wrong information in that wall of text of yours. That does NOT help if you try to make it look less shady.

Yeah sure you can. But you could not defend your position on that topic either. So how many times did you get involved into a discussion about AIDS with scientists that work on the topic and discuss the validity of this or that claim about it. You just accept it’s bad because that’s what people told you. Since that matches the scientific consensus you are probably fine, so don’t worry 😉 . It still doesn’t make your opinion about AIDS and informed one, even though you are most likely right about it.

There is no scientific consensus on Bitcoin yet. It’s still too new to see if it will work or eventually fail. As someone who works with it and understands the technology and ideas behind it all I can say is that **it has a good chance**. But you can’t, because all you do is repeat opinions from the internet and you probably don’t even know where they came from, if they are actually based on knowlege about the topic, or if it’s just based on gut feelings like many of your posts are.

> [@Aedaxus](#):
>
> See, it’s not a scam people, MIT is involved

No it’s not. MIT license means a specific type of software license that allows you to use and modify the code for whatever purpose you see fit. The license gets it’s name from where it was written, the MIT, but software under the MIT license doesn’t need to have anything to do with the MIT.

Go read your own Wikipedia page. When the “chosen lead developer” tried to push out a change to increase the blocksize the network rejected it. He then literally forked off to do his own thing which eventually failed. I don’t know if there is even a better example of how little power the coders have.

Not a lot are coding, but a lot of eyes are on the code. If people are even thinking about touching any of the holy rules it causes a serious drama that reaches everyone no matter if they can write or read code.

Miners are not in control of anything. I think I already told you that in another thread. Also miners are not the same as nodes, in case that is what confused you.

Dude, stop scamming. You now claim that no one from MIT was assigned by Satoshi?

Actually the Op said it’s a MLM scheme. but since I don’t know people in MLM schemes I used this example. But I guess I cant’ talk about things I didn’t get from the Internet either. Freedom of silence. Right? 😃

Yes you can, but it’s not very convincing because you can’t back up your claims with actual knowledge

Man I’m seriously not sure how we got this all so twisted.

Satoshi put his code under the MIT license, which is an extremely common open source license used all over the place. I put some of my code under the MIT license and I have absolutely nothing to do with the MIT either. Just in case you are still confused what the MIT license is, here you can read it in full, it’s like a couple of sentences: [https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/COPYING](https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/COPYING) (inb4 OH LOOK IT HAS NO WARRANTY)

Satoshi also put some guy from MIT as the “successor” in charge, which was eventually kicked out by the rest of the devs.

This two things are completely unrelated. If that is somehow still not obvious I’m not sure what I can write to convince you.

Are you comfortable in your victim role? I did not say you can’t speak your mind, I actually encouraged you to convince me it’s a scam, and I don’t even care what type of scam you think it is, just convince me.

I am in a forums talking about it, agian, you are free to refute any claims with any science you seem to have but only want to keep repeating on how I cannot voice my opinion. And even in that you are wrong, I can and everyone with an account can.

> [@Karak\_Terrel](#):

That’s not a conclusion a bitcoin scientist should make. Well, a self-peer-reviewed one that can’t post anything without saying “the other guy can’t be trusted!”. I don’t need to convince anyone, we are here in a discussion about the pro’s and cons of bitcoin.

That and the “old man yells at bitcoin image”

Why are you so afraid of a bitcoin heretic? Can you point in the EULA or TOS on how people are not allowed to voice their opinion on the subject? Can you also provide a minimal certicifate requirment for allowing people to post AGAINST cryptocoins because obviously you did not as the same for the pro-bitcoiners.
tss.

But it goes a bit far in suggestions on how to counter it which I think are counterproductive and would place honest people like Aaron at the wrong side of the law.

I mean it could be a scam, and many crypto projects are indeed scams to catch this people who are looking to get rich quick. It takes a bit of research to understand what is actually going on and gain confidence in something like that.

I was thinking it’s all a dumb scam and will go to zero as well until ~2.5 years ago. It still took me a while to understand where this is all likely to go, but I was lucky I got into the topic from the technical side of things. From that angle it’s pretty easy to see what’s an actual honest effort to build something that has value or if it’s just a cheap scam.

> [@Anderson\_Geten](#):

No this is incorrect. what you don’t understand is that any network needs maintenance. Anyone mining for a crypto currency is helping to establish the network where the ledger is stored and new currency is created. Without this there is absolutely nothing.

Setting up an ASIC or GPU to mine crypto costs money to buy initially and it costs money to power it. Since there would be no crypto if the hardware didn’t exist it shouldn’t be a surprise to find that there are network fees paid to the miner.

The very foundation of crypto is people like me who mine with GPU’s and people who have 1000’s of ASIC’s. If all off our equipment suddenly disappeared there would be no crypto anywhere.

I just can’t see it, it is actually people and their buying and selling of crypto that has given it a high value. On it’s own crypto doesn’t actually do anything, Crypto is minted then just sits in a wallet, it gets transferred to another wallet then sits there.

I was very much the same, I failed to see crypto’s value at first and then I suddenly started watching financial news channels and went on crypto tech forums and got a better idea of what was goin on. I am also good on the tech side of things as I repair computers. I started to see the value of crypto when I had a look at the world and got a better understanding of poverty, inflation, privacy. I thought well I have a couple of GPU’s let me put them to work, since then I am addicted and spend hours on the web looking at GPU specs and doing comparisons, tweaking the settings on my GPU’s to optimise earning,

I’m still very excited that I maintain mining computers that process transactions on a global scale. I would never have thought I could ever do anything like this in my life, crypto has changed my life for the better and I can do business on my terms I can earn as little or as much as I want if I put the work in. Prior to crypto mining I was living month to month.

Anyone with good computer skills can fire up a couple of GPU’s and get some of your bills paid and give yourself a break from this harsh financial system we find ourselves in.

Lets not pretend workplace bullying doesn’t exist. If you’re unhappy with your job become a crypto miner, the crypto community will support you and make sure you know everything you need to earn money from mining.

That’s what YOU fail to understand.

If something does not generate value but costs money, then people would not pay for it.

That’s what makes it a scam : it generates value out of thin air.

Good luck mining without electricity, without internet, without CPU designers, without a state, without roads. “the very foundation” my ass.

The very foundation, that is the people who push that technology, are those who have a financial interest in paying people like you to have their GPU make accounting job.

Yes I noticed

No tool does anything by itself. You can use cryptography to send messages privately, to check validity of data, to ensure non-tampering.

6€/day is a break ? quit smoking, that would be a break.

Relates to 6 x 8gb GPU’s and the current BTC value…one can buy more or less if they choose, but never would I expect you to understand such a simple and basic point.

One could buy 24 GPU’s and earn £24 per day at current BTC value. It’s their choice.

One could buy 2 GPU’s and earn £2 per day, again, it’s their choice.

You’re obviously rich if you turn your nose up at £6 per day passive income, most people in the world do not have your view and would appreciate earning £6 per day passively. I’m sure they would find plenty use for it especially if they have kids.

This has to be the longest NON-EvE related thread allowed in GD that I’ve seen before.

Well, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson mumbled about some dream he had during an interview, so we now can legally discuss NFT’s and everything related to it. [EVERYONE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTFt5wxx3g8) is invited into the best thread ever.
