Actually, I’m planning to get Solar Panels, an Inverter, and probably a massive battery/UPS to store the solar energy I farm. If all goes well I can make my mining greener and save some money.

With ASIC’s they throw away the perfectly good case, PSU, fans, and control board. I agree BTC ASICS have poor standards.

I suggested earlier that the manufacturers of Asics should swap out the Asic array boards and not replace the whole damn thing.

So you will buy something extra that you don’t need that isn’t green to produce and ship, to be green. Ok.

You’re really buying it in the hope to suck less energy from the grid and reduce your bills and likely get some kind of tax payer grant to reduce the cost of installation. You won’t be making bank from selling the energy back onto the grid, they pay pennies. That’s why its better to consume it than sell it back out onto the grid.

If money (GBP) comes into my bank account on a regular basis then it is earnings that I must put on my self assessment tax return. I can also detail my expenses.

Once I exchange my BTC for physical cash it becomes an income and is subject to tax minus expenses. My expense is massive, lots and lots of GPU’s.

On my tax return I detail how much physical money I earned from all of my income sources, Once the value of BTC I have exchanged is more than the value of my GPU’s then it is profit. I could have 3000 bitcoins, but I won’t be charged a penny of tax until I exchange them for cash.

Ah you got me 🙂

And yes, I do need a solar power set up, electric in the UK is set to rise sharply in a few months. Also there is a cheap way to do it, I can get a big roll of photovoltaic cell sheets and frame it in glass and waterproof plastic maybe.

A few guys on the internet use truck batteries in an array as their storage, I’ll probably build a shed and have Cells on some sort of tripod in the middle of the lawn. I can’t afford to put the cells on my roof yet so i’ll use my makeshift skills.

I don’t get why people say it’s all waste. Yes, the miner companies switch them out, because for them it’s a massive cost factor to run the most efficient miners. But there are other people that buy them and use them, because for them it’s still cost efficient.

I know at least one person who heats with Bitcoin miners. He used to have just a radiator, that’s how they heat there, by burning electricity. So he just got a bunch of old ASICS for cheap, because if he burns the energy anyway he may as well get some money back by mining with it. Produces exactly same amount of heat.

Think about that, he is extremely more efficient than any other miner, he basically outperforms them all economically.

I believe the only issue with PoW is that the market hasn’t settled yet. If it becomes well known that this is a good way to tap excess energy or subsidize overproduction which is essential to have in a green grid (because of wind and sun fluctuation), it will not be seen as waste, but a tool to increase efficiency of green energy production.

Indeed, I have 2 x 2000w heaters that I will probably never turn on again even in the coldest of winters, Crypto has helped me save lots of cash on my heating for sure 🙂

Environmentalists should consider this; they are very quick to point out how much electric is used from mining crypto, but they will never point out that everyone who mines crypto at home will probably never turn on their heating again.

It costs me £1 per hour to have those heaters on so I am saving money on cold days.

But you replaced them with how many video cards Who run 24/7 at how many watts?
I do agree that keeping your PC on to heat a room is probably less bad than the wasteful electrical heating appliance. Actually, that would be a good business to replace those heating appliances with Bitcoin mining boxes, there we got a business!

An RX 5600 xt uses 50 watts, I can’t say how many I have.

1 of my rigs which has 8 GPU’s attached is more efficient at heating than my heater.

Yeah but that is just the start of it. Also just in case this wasn’t obvious, a heat pump would be even more efficient 🙂

Electricity has to be either used or stored (which is hard). If you don’t have any capacity to store it and it doesn’t get used that is really bad for the whole grid, because it will increase the voltage. The other way around, if you produce not enough and your storage is empty the voltage will get too low. So there has to be a delicate balance be maintained.

Fossil fuel or nuclear can be more easily regulated, but especially wind and solar have an issue that they are highly depending on the weather. So the obvious solution is to build a lot of storage, but that is super hard. In the absence of such options you could also build an energy overproduction and have a contract with Bitcoin miners as dynamic load. This way you don’t have to shutdown parts of your energy production if there is low demand and the whole plant becomes economically more efficient. And in the case of high demand and low output you can just shutdown the miners and free up capacity.

That’s why I say the market hasn’t settled. There is indeed a demand for energy consumers like Bitcoin, but it just in the process of getting utilized by this companies. If they become big enough, every miner who is not using waste energy will be washed out of the market.

I was surprised to find out modern solar panels still work reasonably well on the cloudiest of days. and rain helps to keep the panels clear of grime.

The gist of your ideas are good, but note that contamination from local sources of alkalinity such as soil, fly ash or ammonia, and chloride impurities from “coal burned by people not using a miner” will remain after the rainwater evaporates. 🙂

So you will have to clean those panels regularly. Just wipe themù down with those rubber window wiper things (squeegee?) and you’ll be fine.

I had a thought, with Russia facing crippling sanctions does anyone think they will do a U-turn on their decision to ban crypto?

I was thinking they could put lots of their money into BTC or start mining it and accepting it as legal tender and remaining in a strong position financially.

Sorry for bringing this topic into it, I’ll apologise straight away, it is devastating what’s happening there and I hope people can get safe and be well.

It would be great if someone could help me with what’s possible, I am humbly seeking info on how BTC would affect war and sanctions if anyone cares to let me know how they think it will go.

So, if it’s for “science” then that means, _Golem_ and coins of similar like that are used to reward lending out compute power for “human progress” would be good right?

You’re going to be lending that compute power anyway, might as well be rewarded for it. This dates back to the SETI/Folding@Home/Bionic screensavers of the 90’s.

That is what these project networks have done in order to attract more compute power for science, hook into cryptocurrency to reward the GPU lenders. It became an existential survival tool for science networks like this, it benefits them.

We’ve been utilising idle compute power since the beginning of the computation era and in a distributed manner since we had networks.

And you can “feel good” about using a token/currency that helped “science” too.

And then it became clear to the distributors of energy that it was under valuated and the market adapted. Plain and simple economics. If I can make $2 from $1 of electricity at home ‘for free’ then everyone would do it, but just like “perpetual motion” devices, that does not exist.

Whats that?
I thought it is computing or not computing and not computing is being idle.

Is this something like using 100% of your brain instead of 10%?

It would then take 100% of the cpu all the time and that I dont like. It would use 100% energy.
