Here we go…yet more mis-representation. It is your entire dishonest method.

Ah, yet more resort to your god-like psychic universal comprehension of everything CCP say and do…which curiously happens to be 100% coincidental with your own views. Strange, that.

> My thoughts immediately turned to, in high sec anyone can PvP another so long as certain conditions exist, there is a duel option, there are war deccs, there is the milita, there is RvB, there is dropping cans so others can go criminal, there is catching someone coming out of a filament with a criminal flag, etc, etc.

My own perspective seems to be a minority in this in the sense that most of my activities revolve around PvE content in high sec, but I like that maybe people could come to get me. I have found the easiest way to make money in the game is through trade in high sec, but trade in high sec is so boring. Hauling stuff around is at least a little exciting when I see tornadoes sitting on the gates coming into perimeter. For it to be exciting for me it must be unexpected. Dueling is ok, but not really that exciting because I know it is coming. I know the tricks and may have even already scanned my opponent’s ship. As a FW player, I almost never see war targets around high sec, it is not frequent enough to be worth looking for fights there instead of low sec. RvB is just dueling long term. None of what you are suggesting in non-consensual. That is the huge difference. The fun in consensual PvP is just not there long term, for me.

Totally removing non-consensual PvP in high sec would ruin the game for me. The non-consensual PvP is what makes EvE special. Without you might as well go play battlegrounds in WoW. By demanding voluntary conditions, you ruin the fun.

Get a fast Sunesis…you can get the align time down to under 2 seconds with inertial stabilisers. Then buy up small but expensive items where there is a big difference in price across the regions. Not only making ISK, but its also fun zooming past the gankers with an align time that’s too fast for anyone to even lock onto.

Good gaming companies _create_ the current market…are not led like a donkey by the fickle-ness of it. Good marketing _tells_ the customer what they need. You are right Alltara, they are fast and a lot of fun to fly. Although, as it has become a well known “thing” it is also a target, like flying a leopard. But they are very difficult to catch with fast align times and have okish cargo capacity, if a little small.

I favor a blockade runner if I only have a light cargo to carry, but usually fly a DST for the increased cargo capacity.

This is a very good point. EvE has succeeded, even though the market is much smaller for PvP centric MMO’s than PvE centric ones. Always chasing the market can mean that you also have the hardest competitors, as so many of the “wow” killers that have failed has found out over the years.

I honestly think the closer EvE becomes to wow, the quicker it will die.

Absolutely! I have found the hunt to be more fun than the fight, from both sides of the chase as a small-time pirate and now as a hauler. Something that I think does not get mentioned, is cats are good for chipmunks over the long run. Herbivore populations tend to need predators. EvE’s PvE is significantly weaker than other PvE oriented games. Even well-meaning weakening of the PvP in EvE will only hurt the game in the long run.

All the times I won EvE, it was because I was bored with the game.

> It’s not a good point because it’s fundamentally wrong. You even say “the market is much smaller…” so you acknowledge that the market is something that exists, not something you create. The gamers already exist and they already have preferences, and game companies are competing by appealing to various groups of those preferences. It’s certainly not “wimpy” for a company to look at an evolving market and evovle their game to cater to it.

Well hold on there Lucas, I think you are making a couple assumptions that may not be factual. I remember a world before video games. I was not born a videogame player. I grew up loving reading fantasy and sci-fi stories as a kid. Way before personal computers were a thing I rode around the neighborhood with my friends, pretending our bikes were X-wing fighters or WW2 fighter planes, or we tried to beat each other up with swords and lances made out of cardboard tubes claiming to be knights.

I have a childish romantic attachment to the idea of being a citizen of a noble kingdom fighting for my guild, clan, or country. This was instilled in me from watching Star Trek, reading the legends of King Arthur, playing wargames, and just playing make-believe games as a kid.

It is not true that markets just are is it? Once there was no MMO market, because there was no such thing as MMOs. They are made, often by pioneering producers. As far as MMO’s go, I would say Gary Gygax was the one that introduced me into the idea of MMO’s, and Everquest, then Shadowbane were the two games that got me involved in them. If it were not for playing Dungeons and Dragons in the ‘80’s I would not have been nearly excited for Everquest in 1999. If I had not played EQ, I would not have been hooked by Shadowbane. If Shadowbane had not had as many problems with lag and exploitations as it had, I would have never moved on to EvE.

Has the market for PvP centric MMO’s always been there? Or have there been pioneering companies that were taking risks and building new products, creating new markets?

Back to my point though (which you skipped past) there is a market for MMO’s. It seems to be a failing market from my impression. Failing because of the long domination of WoW, and the repeated attempts at making a “WoW’ killer that unwittingly, has created a pseudo homogeneity in MMO’s. I feel this every time I try a new MMO. If it plays like WoW, I almost instantly become bored with it, because I find WoW boring. EvE is one of the few games that is its own thing. This is one of the reasons why it has lived as long as it has. The more EvE is “evolved” into being like other games, the more it moves towards a pseudo WoW killer chasing the WoW market, I wager the faster it will die.
I know I will end up winning EvE again if it continues to remove its PvP centric nature and slides closer to WoW like gameplay.

It’s hard to get this because for me I get no thrill from attacking anyone, to me it’s the same as attacking an NPC.

I’ve attacked others who were lurking around scanning ships in the hopes of ganking, I felt nothing it’s the same for me as wrecking an NPC.

Don’t be silly. The first gaming companies literally _created_ the gaming market. It was they who dictated what games people played, because they were the ones making the games in the first place. All of the best games have been created by developers creating a game they wanted to play themselves…and not by someone standing on a street corner with a clipboard asking ’ How do you fancy us making a game called Doom ?’

> [@Lucas\_Kell](#):

I could not give a damn what the alleged ‘overall MMO market’ shifts to. Eve is not the overall MMO market…it is a specific and quite niche game. God forbid the day ever arrives when computer games are totally dictated by some fickle supposed ‘market demand’ rather than by talented designers creating superb stuff and _then_ presenting it to the market.

> I just want to preface this by pointing out that when I say “PvP player” I mean “a player who is looking to PvP right now”, and similarly when I say “PvE player” I mean “someone who is looking to PvE right now”. Most players are on a spectrum and move between activities.

It is good that everyone is on the same page with definitions. Just to make sure I understand Lucas, would you say that if I was on my faction warfare character running a complex I was looking for PvE right now, but if I was trying to push into Amarrian’s complexes I was looking for PVP? Or am I asking for PvP by running plexes, and should expect a Amarrians to swoop into the system and push into my plex? I agree that it is a spectrum. Sometimes I want a fight, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I want a fair fight, sometimes I am feeling YOLOy and will jump at anything. Sometimes I will safe even if it is someone I think I can beat, just because. It is up to me, however, to react to others. When I undock, I am willing to submit to some PvP, even when I mostly just want PvE. The excitement is not knowing what will happen. Compartmentalizing it destroys the fun.

> [@Lucas\_Kell](#):
>
> It is, because MMOs were an evolution of video games and so they targeted the video game market. Early MMOs tried to take the things people enjoyed about video games and apply them to larger groups of players at the same time. Video games themselves were evolved from non-videos games such as board games and targeted those markets.
>
> That’s not to say that markets can’t be grown, but games don’t generally come in and just create a market from scratch without any consideration of existing preferences. EVE certainly didn’t either, it was targeting players who enjoyed games like Elite. For space based games, I personally came through games like Elite and Colonial Conquest 2, Star Trek and other single player games, then played games like Disapora and Plantetarion as early multiplayer space games before I played EVE.

Well again we have such different definitions that I don’t think we are speaking intelligibly to each other. The fact that Everquest evolved out of Dungeons and Dragons does not mean that the market for Everquest was always there. If Sony tried to sell Everquest in 1975 it would have been a flop. Almost no one had personal computers in 1975. Sure, you can say that one market is built on another market, but that tortures the language to claim that because of that there have never been pioneers that started new markets. People have always needed light, but there was no market for the incandescent light bulb until people invented the electric lamp. There was a time before MOBA games were a thing. The people who created the DOTA mod in WarCraft created this genre of games. They created the market for MOBAs.

> [@Lucas\_Kell](#):
>
> I don’t know if there ever really has been a sizable market for PvP centric MMOs at all. EVE was only PvP centric in that everything affected a shared universe. It certainly wasn’t some MMO space deathmatch.

I agree that the PvP centric MMO has always been a small market. I don’t understand what you are talking about with the Deathmatch statement. EvE has never been an MMO death match. I don’t think anyone is trying to turn it into Unreal Tournament. They just want EvE to remain what it always has been.

> [@Lucas\_Kell](#):
>
> It’s failing for a lot of reasons. Personally I think a major one is that back in the day there were few MMOs and the types of players into playing MMOs were much more serious gamers, spending huge amounts of hours playing them. As time has gone on there’s now a lot more competition, which splits out the serious gamers, and a lot more casual gamers to appeal to to keep the lights on.

I agree with you here. There is a lot of competition for MMOs. Particularly PvE MMO’s. Many many game are competing for the casual gamers money. Why you think it would be wise for EvE to abandon its niche market where it is successful and enter a very competitive market that focuses on areas where EvE is not competitive? I just don’t think EvE is going to compete with PvE focused games for PvE focused players. My friends that like PvE MMO’s hate EvE, claiming that it is boring, non-immersive, and feels like a second job.

> [@Lucas\_Kell](#):
>
> And I don’t think EVE should be like WoW. I just also don’t think EVE should cater exclusively to people who want combat PvP. To me EVE is more than big enough to cater to a wider variety of playstyles, I just think that right now PvE players are always able to be forced into PvP at the whim of the aggressor and that makes it a pain in the ass for most casual players.
>
> What I really don’t understand is why PvP players think their game would be negatively impacted if there were an area of space they couldn’t engage in non-consensual PvP in. It wouldn’t remove the ability to PvP, it would just mean that PvP in this one area would need to be wanted by both sides (or opted into by having a structure, etc).
>
> Outside of gankers, most PvP players wouldn’t notice. I mainly roam in lowsec and NPC null when I want to PvP for example, and I would not be negatively impacted by the inability of a ganker to shoot some random in a venture. I would however be positively impacted if the game had 10k more players and even just 1 % of them chose to fly in lowsec or NPC null some of the time. I’m more than happy for people to pay for omega accounts and sit in highsec shooting rocks with lasers in perfect safety.

Eve always has and does cater to many different play styles. I spend a lot of time in high sec doing high sec stuff. I mine. I haul. I run level 4 missions. Eve allows for all of this without any changes to rules. One just has to learn the ropes. You want to eliminate play styles. While destroying a nonconsensual high sec PvP you are also sucking the fun out of my game play. EvE needs to have nonconsensual PvP across the board. When you compartmentalize and make it consensual you destroy the hunt.

EvE is not going to be swamped with PvE players. EvE’s PvE is boring. EvE’s PvE cannot compete with the current crop of PvE games. You are just going to shrink the player base by kicking out people who enjoy the playstyle that you are destroying.

Well, as I had mentioned earlier in the post, I like the hunt more than the attack. And I enjoy being on either side ad a hunter or the hunted. I do find combat in EvE also exciting though, because I may lose something that I have spent weeks or months building. There is a chance of loss in EvE that few MMO’s still have because it is a turn off to many players. But without the chance of loss, I get bored quickly and quit the game.

If you are not wired that way, that is fine with me. Not everyone has to like the same thing.

And what hunts can be like if people would actually hunt worthy prey, I have been thinking about going into Pochven wait my time (to use a filament), and while cloaked in a bomber find a nice group in there and drop a void bomb on an appropriate group.

Go into a wormhole camp the entrance and wait for a gankers to gank and drop a bomb on both parties.

A surprise like that is far more entertaining for me than finding fish in a bucket and get a thrill from catching a fish, that ending is pretty much a guarantee and definitely not worth doing.

By the way I use to bait in low sec and definitely know that people will scan down an empty rookie ship simply to kill it, that’s a good time to attack.
