Actually CCP took away most of the ability for miners who where actively playing the game to fight back within a year of me starting this game. They nerffed the mining ships of which the hulk was the mainstay so you could not fit them out in a meaningful way. to fight back. At that time if you worked it out you could mine and fight off the smaller ships that tried to take your ores, and guess what…beat em 🙂

You do know that there is still a barge that has tank and combat bonuses, right? You just have to trade mining yield for it.

Go on please enlighten me as this is a new toon expressly for getting back into Eve due to a forced break from the game and there is soooo much I have forgotten

> When mankind actually has combat in deep space, it will likely be much like Eve.

When mankind actually has combat in deep space, I promise you, we will not be firing salami slices_1_ at impossibly high energy levels_2_. More, when mankind actually has combat in space, line of sight will be a thing. Asteroids, dust, even other ships will all block incoming fire, whether they intend to or not. So no, I really doubt it’ll be all that much like EVE at all.

As for the ‘due to all the strategy options and possible outcomes’… yes, that’s because you’re interacting with _people_. That’s not the game mechanics making it interesting. That’s the other people. That’s why I’m bored out of my mind in a dungeon room w/100 rats, but I’ve got plenty to do and keep me engaged running the fleet’s logistics in a fight against 2000 other _people_.

> [@Van\_Devan](#):
>
> However, you have not truly answered the question because nobody is able to truly give an answer. This is the part that interests me the most. What effect are these changes going to have on the game and how people interact or engage in the game? That will boil down to players experience. Will it improve players experience or will it turn them off?

For the vast majority of players, it will have no real impact at all. Because the vast majority of players _don’t_ get that involved in the game outside of their missioning and their mining in highsec with their buddies. CCP’s confirmed that time and again. It’s why the majority of the people who interest here, on these forums, tend to be people who’ve moved outside of highsec, and why the majority of the people who get involved and vote in the CSM elections _aren’t from highsec_.

Highsec players, by and large, are mostly disorganized or only loosely organized, take little to no interest in the gameplay of anyone else—or at most, only their small, maybe dozen-person corporation—and don’t engage with the larger EVE community at all. CCP’s given us that information many, many times over the years at FanFest and Vegas presentations, and there’s no reason to believe it’s suddenly changed.

> [@Van\_Devan](#):
>
> With the new breed of players coming into the game they will run with the ball and probably put a lot of older Eve players to shame.

What ‘new breed of players’? Hmm? Once again: nothing CCP has presented _at any point_ indicates any change in the overall demographics of EVE, or even that there is any considerable influx of new players. Before you go speculating on ‘new breed of players’ and what they’ll do, you really need to show _some_ indication that there’s a new breed of players to speculate _about_.

> [@Van\_Devan](#):
>
> Virtual reality will become more engaging through this format and its appeal is already growing in other areas outside Eve.

This is not going to happen with any game that wants you logged in for 8+ hours at a time, which EVE often requires once you start playing it at the scales needed to ‘be the new Lords of Low and Null sec’. Just won’t. Nor is there any particular advantage to VR in EVE.

The biggest part of EVE’s UI is information management, namely the Overview, the Watch List, fleet broadcasts, your ship and module status, etc. VR doesn’t really enhance any of that. The fact that EVE’s main interface tool is a mouse pointer immediately works _against_ the advantages of VR, where HOTAS and console controllers remove the need for an on-screen pointer and shift your focus to an on-screen point-of-focus, usually a targeting location. The moment a mouse pointer is moving across ‘reality’, it’s pulling you right out of the immersion that VR is working very hard to create.

* * *

1. 1400mm-wide projectiles with a total volume of 0.025m3 gives us a projectile length of 0.004m, or 4/10ths of a millimeter for battleship artillery rounds. Similarly, 0.025m3 Antimatter L from a 425mm railgun means a projectile length of 0.04m, or 40mm. Still definitely in the ‘salami slice’ range.
2. A large artillery battery on a POS can reach out and touch a target 500+km away in _exactly_ the same amount of time it takes a laser beam to do it. You know what we call the speed a laser travels at in space? You know what kind of energy it would take for anything with mass to reach that speed in a single moment of acceleration?

New breed of players are high sec. Already engaged with three who are going out to 0.5 and 0.4 systems from high sec and mining or have a definite interest in going out to null/low sec exploring. All three of them are less than 180 days old. Yet to meet the others they go with in small groups. At present no idea how many are in the group(s) they go out with. One at least goes on his own probably for the very reasons you mention above.

Only found this out due to creating this char to relearn much of what I have forgotten about Eve.

Interesting notes on projectiles and POS 🙂

Sent you an in game message Arrendis 🙂

Yes for sure, I’m looking forward to the effect it has on Sov. Another possibility is Sov Alliances might want to recruit hisec mining corps and trade directly. We also know that many of the large battles in Eve have depended on hisec markets to rebuild fleets.

With Bot mining I don’t think people who care for the game will bother with it. I’ve always viewed the typical botter as people who only wish to gain real life money from selling the isk/ore they’ve botted.

Id really dig something I could mine in and still either fight off a lone attacker or quickly escape.

Yes, now you’re talking my language! I like the Prospect, it is a mining ship that can warp when cloaked. A pilot who is good at flying should have absolutely no problem dipping in and out of low sec for mining. Be sure to look out for smartbombs/pipebombs on gates you’re warping to though.

Make sure you create bookmarks for the areas you mine in before hand. Do bookmarks that stop a few million kilometers from gates so you’re just off grid and can conduct directional scans and see what’s there before committing to warping on 0. Familiarize yourself with the typical ships used for smart bombing so you know what to look out for.

what I always thought would be fun, but really had no reason to try till now, is a total cov op mining fleet. Prospects, Black Ops, and Blockade Runners. Use Cov Cyno to jump past all the gate camps and mine for a bit, then jump back. A stealth mining op.

Don’t for a moment think its all hopeless. Full of old adages today so here another one " Every cloud has a silver lining". OK its pretty cloudy here at the moment. SO my question is what’s causing the clouds, the doom sayer’s to speak to loudly, the pessimists to get down in their cups and the out right bull in a china shop artists who love to rant and rage quit?

It’s fear.

Fear of change. Fear the new seat is going to be uncomfortable. Fear they are going to be on the back foot and caught with their pants down. Yes there will be uncomfortable moments. Its always the same when you step out in your shiny new shoes. Your feet are going to hurt after a while. Then suddenly you notice they actually are quite comfortable because they have been broken in.

Gonna have to stop you here to point out that anecdotal evidence is, well, anecdotal, and not actual data. It can’t be relied on, and it’s not a broad enough sample size to be seen as indicative of anything. How many people _didn’t_ you talk to? How many people did you talk with who weren’t going to low/null, and you just didn’t particularly mark those folks or that conversation?

The mind’s a funny thing. S’why data collection needs rigorous controls before you go starting to draw conclusions.

> [@Van\_Devan](#):
>
> Interesting notes on projectiles and POS

POS guns are just the most extreme example. Battleships do the same thing to 300km or so. Point is, if he thinks we’re gonna get a single chemical explosion that accelerates a projectile to 600km/s, he’s smoking something. Especially since holding the ship steady while you do volleys of 8 of those explosions, or accelerating magnetic fields, in a single direction would take similar energy discharges in the exact opposite direction. Anyone who advocates that extra complexity vs ‘use a damned LASER’ is on crack. But of course, the LASER is _still_ directed energy emission, so it’d need to be countered.

> [@Obed\_Marshh](#):
>
> Are there any cloaky mining ships?

As mentioned, the Prospect is a Covert Ops mining frigate. Just remember, you can’t cloak if someone has you targeted, and stealth bombers do not have a targeting delay when they decloak. Your best bet for ‘quickly escape’ is the same as for ‘fight off a lone attacker’: bring friends. As many as you can get.

Other miners help by dropping more combat drones. Combat pilots can sit ready to defend you. Scouts can sit cloaked and watch for hostile gangs 2-3 jumps out.

_Organization and numbers_—these will _always_ be the best way forward with any given set of tools.

Sounds like fun, I like you, you’re a real Eve player! Instead of complaining you take a look and then think of ways to adapt.

I think this is the exact type of gameplay CCP wanted to inspire with these changes.

It can’t be relied on, and it’s not a broad enough sample size to be seen as indicative of anything. How many people _didn’t_ you talk to? How many people did you talk with who weren’t going to low/null, and you just didn’t particularly mark those folks or that conversation?

Yes I understand. True its anecdotal because I related conversations that happened. Primary reason for noting those conversation were because two of them actually invited me to join them and the third was someone who is now only 2 days old. Guess what I said to him.

OHH nooo don’t do that you will regret it for the rest of your Eve life

or

Here write to this guy and see if you can get an invite so you have safe passage to go and explore.

or

Think you better hang on for a bit until you have more experience. Would suggest at least another 6 months

Used to dodge gatecamps in a covops many years ago and scan WHs while cloaked. I’m pretty much a solo player. Think of my character as a hand loader. I like to make my own ammo. Zydrine is the only thing I can’t get enough of by reproccing my loot, and some small scale mining might be a fun but quick break from missions and exploration.
