I am not forgetting that. But adjusting the application settings is the _last step_. If you haven’t assembled a car properly, you won’t make it drive smoothly by “adjusting the brakes”.

Well, buy a MAC and only use certified applications.
Hint: That “hipster nerdgasm” stuff is _help from experts_ who solved the problems many users had with pieces from different manufaturers working together only suboptimal (not related to EVE, but in general). They are offering you their expertise _for free_.
You are the type of customer who uses 12 aftermarket tuning parts on his car and if it doesnt work because no proper installation and assembly was done, yells at one of the manufacturers that “THE STUFF SHOULD JUST WORK DAMNIT!!!”.
If you want stuff that “just works”, don’t use custom-built PCs with independent software.

> The stars in EVE are brighter at 25AU than they are when you are right frikin next to them ! What was that about absurdity ?

Because a capsuleer doesn’t “look” at the stars through a window and if you are right next to it, your sensor overlay simply applies a very strong filter so your brain doesn’t melt. That filter is obviously unnessessary as long as the star is only a small part of the screen, to have it visible at all (which wouldn’t be the case if it was just dark…).

You mean turbo autists.

Let’s just use some _logic_, shall we. If it were monitor or general display settings is then **everyone having this issue would have it all the time in everything including windows and other games.** If that were the case they’d A) already fixed that by now, B) thrown their PC out of the window or C) probably would have _mentioned_ that here by now.

The fact some that people, like me, go “It’s just Caldari that’s too bright compared to the others” SHOWS it’s not some setting on our side, because if that were the case… **it’d be everywhere**.

People complaining about overly bright issues and their screenshots showing overly bright **is probably not something they have happen to them 24/7** , it’s EVE specific.

so a) it’s Caldari being too bright and b) EVE having issues with some driver/gpu combos. BOTH ARE CCP’S DOING, use some f’ing logic.

> While people learn from young age that looking into the sun is not a good idea because it is ‘bright’, it wouldn’t be beneficial for players to realistically increase this brightness even further when in a spaceship right next to that sun. People aren’t used to fly close to the sun, so it can be tuned down for gameplay reason without losing the realism people expect from suns. So they toned that part down a little. It’s still bright, but not ‘you are on fire’ bright.

That is all just nonsense. Many routes to stargates include bright stars in the field of view _for most of the way_. You have to keep actively turning your field of view away from them. _You_ try sitting at Jita 4-4 for 2 hours with the same bright star in your field of view the entire time. Again….I have to deliberately look away…which doesn’t really help as the people I am after are in the direction of that star…lol. There is absolutely no _need_ for stars to be that bright. Or anything else, for that matter.

If I turn the camera towards the local star I indeed get this bright ‘glare’ effect on my camera:

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/eveonline/original/4X/0/9/6/096c43e192ff7af49ffd4376bca17eee3a0d7bdc.jpeg)

This glare, in combination with the very bright spot on my screen where the sun is, intentionally gives the illusion that the star is very bright.

As it should be, because it’s a star.

However as my monitor is properly calibrated and my room not too dark, this merely gives the _illusion_ of a bright star on my screen.

It’s not actually bright.

Brighter is the light of the lamps in my room, the walls behind my monitors, so even if I look to the picture of this star my eyes don’t have to squint like they would do if I were to look at a white monitor in a dark room.

If looking into the sun in EVE is too bright for your eyes, the solution isn’t hard:

Get some proper lights in your room.

> [@Aisha\_Katalen](#):

Absolutely not. It depends how those “other applications” display bright areas. In EVE - and especially in some systems in Caldari Space (but also around Amarr) those areas are indeed bright and - more important - wide. That can just - in combination with the other setttings - push a user over his personal limits of inconvenience.
Also in other applications very bright spots may happen only occasionally and quickly, like in shooters, explosions and so on. They are over so quickly, some users simply doesn’t notice the difference of them being actually brighter than they should be.

Like with sound, many users actually have pretty poor perception of what a “good image” actually looks like. For some you can do a proper monitor calibration and they won’t notice the difference in 90% of all cases, but you _cut off_ the extremes which reduces the “inconvenience peaks”. And thats why it is important, even if the user doesn’t believe in it. It’s the same with sound setups, some people just plug in the cables and claim “yeah thats all fine!!!” but then complain about artifacts in deep-bass situations or squeezing in high pitch situations. A proper hearing- and headphone-based equalizer setup would totally help them, but instead they keep complaining and calling all that “nerd stuff!”. 🤷‍♂️

And given the total amount if complaints (which basically come from a handful of people out of whathowmanyhundredthousand EVE users) the problem doesn’t seem to be a general one with EVE.

You mean ALL other applications so it’s EVE specific. Thanks for clearing that up.

A friend of mine was looking to watch downloaded movies on his tablet and he wanted to do that without being forced to have his PC running. In come the “experts”…

One tried to convince him that if he didn’t use a 2.5Gb lan it would be totally useless, another instilled the fear of hell into him stating he **needed** a raid solution. They were literally trying to sell him on a 2.5Gb 6 slot raid NAS.

_Those experts_, you seem to be one of them.

You’re cheating though!

I get the feeling the 9 AU shot of that star is through one of these:

I’m not cheating. There’s nothing wrong with using the brightness settings as intended. If you want space to be darker, there is a solution. Anyone can adjust this setting to any value they want, so I’m not sure people are wasting their time complaining about something they can easily resolve.

Here is Isanamo at 7 AU.

It doesn’t show much.

It’s just a sampling bias.

There have been various screenshots of bright skyboxes outside Caldari space in EVE in this thread.

The main reason I think that people complain about Caldari space isn’t because Caldari space is particularly bright. It’s because Caldari space is bright and _particularly crowded_.

If Amarr space were to be more popular than Jita I bet most of the brightness complaints would be about Amarr skyboxes being too bright instead:

It ‘should’ be not so bright that its annoying….whether it is a star or a cucumber.

When people complain ( and a lot do ) that modern LED car headlights are too bright….simply saying ‘ they’re headlights, they’re supposed to be bright’ is not a solution.

And for the umpteenth time….I dont have this issue with ANY other application.

Cucumbers generally aren’t as bright as the sun, so it would be silly for one to be that bright in a game.

And I too understand the complaints about car headlights that are too bright, it’s awful if you’re in the dark and one of those things shines in your eyes. It’s impossible to see anything besides those things in the dark.

Luckily while playing EVE you don’t have to play in a dark room. Turn on some lights.

In all fairness, @Akeem_Jahrastamon had a Wightstorm system effect (the metaliminal ice storm of Winter Nexus) — that storm distorts the way the systems look, and it can in some cases make brighter parts look unsightly:

 ![Screenshot 2025-12-15 at 21.24.33](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/eveonline/original/4X/2/f/5/2f50f0741da027601c30f5c64e66fed3339844d9.jpeg)

Normal Caldari space looks like this:

 ![Korsiki](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/eveonline/original/4X/4/e/9/4e98abdecc29db7cf5ca53298e67da8794ba79cd.jpeg)

Absolutely no problems with the bottom one. I don’t particularaly mind the storm system either, but I wouldn’t want it to look like that all the time. **But it has an ice storm effect active.** There’s snow and ice particles in space there. I don’t know how one would go about making such a system-wide effect and not have it distort the visuals like it does, it’s probably a technical thing and CCP has veered towards making it brighter. In effect – snow particles should actually make the system look darker, because they will blot out light. However, ice particles can amplify light and glow in the space. So it’s one and the other, and if you can make it better, apply for a job at CCP.

So, in all fairness, complaints of those who posted screenshots with Wightstorm effects in them have that point – systems are brighter than normal. But this doesn’t apply to graphics in normal systems, which look absolutely okay on a professional level. And if you don’t like them, it’s probably a personal preference so just save yourself and others and press ctrl + shift + F9.

I could adjust the brightness if I wanted to do so. I can go into my aging laptop setting and adjust it even further were I chose to do so. The three screenshots were taken on a curved HDR monitor. My brightness is a higher and could adjust tit down. I could also dig into my video card and make adjustments there as well. But am comfortable with the setting as is.

I also play another 20 year old game and BG3 and have no problems once I made the adjustments to suit me. In essence if you do not like what you are seeing for whatever the reasons. Good, bad, or indifferent. One always has the option of adjusting your monitors setting to what you feel comfortable with.

You can adjust each game individually to suit you. I do it all the time. It is not a big deal or a problem if you take the time and are willing to adjust settings to suit you. I am a boomer. I can not even change the time in my cars clock fer gods sweet sake. Yet I can do this easily.

Hello, one and all,

I can confirm with absolute certainty, after extensive testing using the scientific method, that setting the brightness scala in a certain way, **can make the game brighter and darker!!**

I hope that this confirmation will help settle the ongoing disputes in this thread, and we can all enjoy ever lasting peace in new eden.

Alternatively, I propose that you settle this argument with old-fashioned violence. Destroy each other’s ships and structures. Ruin your social networks and reputation. Set your home systems ablaze, and, ideally, drag all your corpmates and friends that have nothing to do with your personal disputes, into the fire right alongside yourselves. If you don’t quit, then you win the argument. This, is EVE.

With peaceful regards
-James Fuchs
