> What would be the point of any mining support ship without its core for that matter.

The majority of the mining boost is already available without core.

The core only adds a small boost improvement on top, is a prerequisite for remote compression and adds some flavourful bonuses like increased drone yirld and self-repairs.

It is totally viable to not to have a core at all, or to only use it every now and then to enable compression if your situation isn’t safe enough to have it running all the time.

I’ve often used a core-less Porpoise, which still offers high yield boosts to my Hulk as well as a huge ore hold to store the Hulk’s ore, a setup which still is able to instantly warp away the moment hostile players enter local.

Well, even though the statements here are correct, i see no point in operating without a core. Yes, its another situational convenience obviously.

It sounds like most of you are running solo mining ops since youre worried about protection that much. Im in mining fleets…which consists of running the core constantly…no matter how small that amount of boosts is.

We arent afk, we have combat support at a seconds notice. I guess what deems the “proper fit” is different depending on the situation. Again, if you cant boost the stats as high as you possibly can ( in a proper fleet ) then a portion of the reason for the orca/porpoise being there is missing.

Play as you like. 🙂

EVE always has tradeoffs of risk versus performance, where small increases of performance at higher performance levels cause much more rapidly increasing risk than the early steps. This means that anyone can find a point of efficiency that works for them.

I’d probably never use expensive officer modules for example even if their performance is greater than any alternative.

I could fly my mining ships with T2 strip miners, with ORE miners or with max rolled abyssal miners, or max rolled abyssal ORE miners.

I’m not going to risk billions for the latter, so I’m already choosing less risk for lower yet reasonable performance.

Likewise my mining laser upgrades are T2 or one of those storyline things at best, because I calculated I’d have to mine 62.5 billion ISK worth of ore before dying for the recently added officer mining laser upgrade to become worth using over T2.

So there too I choose massively reduced risk for a small hit in performance.

In this same line of thought it’s not at all strange to fly a mining support ship without core for a small hit in performance as this too is a massive reduction of risk.

I could fly my Rorqual without core too, but that’s not worth the risk to me either, I’ll just use a cheap Porpoise instead.

If you wish to squeeze out the absolute highest performance of your mining ships and are willing to risk tens of billions extra to do so be my guest, I’ve found a more economical optimum for my own playstyle.

After all, if you lose your ship too early any of that added performance will set you back, so if you expect to lose any ships at all (which is not unlikely in this game!) it’s also good to manage risks and not only chase performance.

This makes cores just optional.

If I recall correctly activating the core on an Orca only adds 5% more yield to the fleet, a small fraction of what an uncored Orca already boosts at a fraction of the risk.

The core allows for compression as well as some of the bursts given by an Orca. Without that core, Orcas are just very poor drone miners.

I agree 100% here. That’s why my Orca is fit the way it is. All I had to do was ditch the drone mining modules. It’s not just EHP that protects it.

Incorrect.

Just four posts above I explained the opposite is true:

**The core is not needed for boosts.**

With T2 Core active a max level Orca boosts yield of ships in the fleet (because of shorter cycle times) by 87%.

Without core it boosts yield of the fleet by 68%.

In other words, the vast majority of the boost is a **base Orca feature** while taking the risk of activating the core only adds an extra 11%.

You can use a core, which often is a good idea but it’s an optional feature, not a necessary one. Orcas are very useful to a mining fleet even without core.

It is true that the Orca is a poor drone miner, but that’s usually not what you bring an Orca for in a mining fleet.

Active Shield boost 100% requires the core to be activated. That’s one boost that does need the core.

> [@Gerard\_Amatin](#):

> Orcas are very useful to a mining fleet even without core.

Core turned off:
Mining boost range: 57km
Shield Boost range: 45km
Compression range: 0km - turned off

Core turned on:
Mining boost range: 114km
Shield Boost range: 91km
Compression range: 125km - turned on

Max Skills

That’s in addition to the huge buff to mining, shield, and active shield repair. (depending on which boosts are currently fit)

If everyone in the field just wants to mine in a Skiff with the biggest mining hold, mine slowly (because Skiffs are terrible miners), and make runs back to station, then yeah. The Orca is the PERFECT addition to the fleet.

Again incorrect.

The Orca can use shield boosts without core active. Like any ship capable of using command bursts the Orca does not need a core to use shield boosts or to benefits from it’s ship role bonuses for those shield command bursts. The Orca could even use skirmish command bursts or expedition command bursts if it wanted, albeit without ship role bonuses.

The rest of your numbers aren’t contradicting what I said either. You could simpy put the mining ships closer to the Orca while mining and still benefit from it’s impressive no-core mining and shield boosts.

If you enjoy flying it that way great. Absolutely do it. Go for it. You can dpend the super high price for substandard gains. Absolutely. I 100% defend your right to crappy performance at a super high cost.

You can train your skills to that of the Orca, raise them to max if you wish, spend billions of ISK, and run the Orca at roughly half its maximum potential. You are free to do so.

‘Roughly half’?

I just explained how the yield bonus is 78% of the max if you skip the core, and you call that ‘half’?

Whenever I mine I put my booster right next to my miners so boost range is irrelevant to me.

It’s the **yield bonus** that I bring the ship for.

You might as well complain about missing the self-repair bonus while you’re using a buffer-fit ship. Who cares?

Range only matters if the fleet wishes to spread out.

Again, the core is optional and only a relatively small yield bonus, and your efforts of convincing me otherwise are failing.

You have already stated that you bring your own command ship. I would assume that you would stay right next to it. No one implied otherwise. It’s also why you don’t care about compression- you dump your ore into the command ship’s mining hold.

But this thread isn’t about your null sec mining habits. This thread was about nerfing Orcas so that no one could safely mine ice in high sec. I guess people are upset that orcas (especially mine) are a bit pricey to blow up.

Here’s an idea for mining: remove all Industrial Command Ships. Of course this goes for the Rorqual as well. They’d have to refund all of the millions of skill points of course.

There would be no more compression which would seriously limit multi-boxing. We’d be back to the days of making frequent trips to the station. Lower yields would mean more mining. High tank Skiffs would become more popular.

It would make transporting ore more dangerous. No more using a high tank Orca. You’d have to use the fragile Ore Hauler to make it to Jita. 🙂

You don’t need to remove mining support ships entirely as well as the cooperative gameplay they encourage just to get rid of compression.

You could simply ask for removal of remote compression modules.

And I’d support that request, I think remote compression made multibox mining too easy.

We should really just go back to the days of very low yield T1 strip miners with no industrial command ships at all. Honestly, that’s the best way. Lower the yield and remove all command ships.

No compression and no high yield that fills up holds too quickly. Make barges and exhumers cheap again!

This wouldn’t change anything. It would just make new player mining annoying. Multibotters would still compress and mine out ice fields and null sec mining fields. It would solve nothing.

Removing compression completely would. No more 99% compression. Who the hell thought that would be acceptable? 99%? (depending on material- some is 90% and others are 99%) It should have been 20% at most.

Removing compression would force all corps and fleets to have a runner to be efficient like @Christine_Creed said. Mine / Ice / Gas fields would be full of life again- ships warping off to unload or jet canning to a circling ore miner, gankers stealing jet cans to flip the ore to bait miners… That’s old school mining! I miss those days!
