There’s no “ñ” in Arizona, although the ethimology is uncertain, it might come from “small creek” (the name the local natives gave to a zone where a silver mining camp was built) or even weirder from Basque for “good oak” after a ranch built by a Basque migrant who stumbled upon a silver mine in his lands. There is a fake ethimology that claims it would come from “_árida+zona_” (arid+zone) but there is no evidence, unlike California which was named after a fictional island of riches on the west that was a kingdom of black amazons under a Queen Calafia. ---

Oh, so it’s the way he talks… now isn’t this a coincidence? I’ve been working on what started as a little tongue-in-cheek joke about vampires and what they do or don’t look like, and the thing moved from a quick test to a full fledged prompt about a strigoaică with a familiar in tow… plus many iterations… and eventually I’m settling with how this: ![Strigoaica night portrait](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/eveonline/original/4X/1/2/4/12490f9eb0d565794b83839fa899781792bbc5a8.jpeg) Your random strigoaica with a traditional _ie_ shirt from the Sibiu area against a background of a random Romanian stave church. …evolved into this, one week later…: ![Strigoaica and familiar](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/eveonline/original/4X/f/4/0/f40fb7e2e2b75d1018e6e3cb145c0c65934bdb5f.jpeg) She looks about 40, with typical transilvanian face and body from centuries past (shorter than current average, with a well defined waist), wearing natural looking make up to conceal her unhealthy face complexion (not the hands, wink, wink). She’s carrying an old handbag where she keeps one of her burial tokens. Her familiar here is a Indian sailor, in this world and time they’re the more likely to vanish without a trace at any random port without inconveniencing their master with a lack of travel papers. This undead tags along a big and scary dude to protect his master without forcing her to go full predator on a random aggressor, or shapeshift and flee as a variety of animals (owls, dogs and cats are favorites) with the annoyance of becoming humanoid again but without her clothes. And her name would be something as exotic as Maria or Ana, because of peasant originality… Eventually, I had to stop myself because nowadays any version of a _strigoi mort_ would be way too conspicuous and so that led into a search for more survivable Transilvanian mythology monsters, which led into a rabbit hole because the perfect match is a creature whose properties change from town to town which is good for character design but bad for brand recognition: what **is** a _moroi_ after all? A shadow? A ghost? Something that sits on people’s chests while they sleep…? ---

If you can’t see yourself in a mirror you’ll have a hard time applying makeup to your face, but applying it to your hands would be trivial. Well, that would depend on what meta you follow. Romanian folklore establishes a relation between mirrors and souls but not strigoi, when someone dies mirrors in the house must be covered so their soul isn’t trapped within the mirror, also anyone gazing into a uncovered mirror in a house with a recent deceased risks being next to die… but as for strigoi vs mirrors, the “can’t see themselves” is a modern invention, like turning into bats or burning under sunlight. In tradition, the _strigoi mort_ are alive at night but become ordinary unanimated dead at dawn, which is why they must return to their grave or hide from sight, lest they be caught and attacked or killed. ---
