Time to go to sleep… night night people! Thick, silver fog rolled over the damp stone path, swallowing the bases of the weathered tombstones and the weeping angel statue that kept watch from the shadows. Dozens of heavy wax candles lined the stone walkway, their orange flames flickering frantically against the cold, ethereal light of a massive full moon. In the center of the courtyard, the silence was shattered by the rhythmic, deliberate step of heavy tactical boots sliding across wet stone. Chad stood rigid, his chest heaving beneath his tight black gear. His eyes, hidden behind dark sunglasses even in the dead of night, were locked onto the woman holding him. Zarra moved like water, her sweeping crimson and black lace gown whispering against the pavement as she guided him through a fierce, dominating tango. Her dark, wavy hair cascaded down her shoulders, catching the twin glints of moonlight and fire. She leaned into him, her hand resting firmly on his shoulder, completely controlling the frame. Why are we here, Zaera? Chad’s voice was a low, tense whisper, his eyes darting toward the ancient cathedral doors glowing with candlelight behind them. Chad is not a vampire. Zarra tilted her head back, a slow, dangerous smile curving her lips. The orange candlelight caught the sharp, unmistakable glint of fangs against the dark velvet of the night. She tightened her grip, dipping him effortlessly lower into the fog as the shadow of the cathedral loled over them. I can fix that, she whispered, her voice like velvet. There is no escaping the dark side, honey. So stop running. Close your eyes, and surrender. ---
