At first I thought she was barefoot too, but there’s what looks like ankle boots on her feet. Technically speaking, working with 1940s film and all that snow in the frame, the photographer pulled a tough one as exposure goes. ---

Because of their arms. The upper part of the arm is a proxy to the fat to muscle ratio in the body. The right balance is when the line between the shoulder and the elbow is mostly straight or slightly convex as in the three ballerinas to the left. It becomes convex with overweight and clearly larger near the shoulder than the elbow (kind of a truncated cone) with obesity, whereas a concave shape points to underweight and lack of body fat (like the ballerina tiptoeing). Another funny thing about the upper arm is that fast weight losses like those from aggressive diets might leave a kind of “bump” in the profile of the upper arm, a point where the circumference is slightly smaller than above and below it. This applies to non-musculated arms, obviously an arm whose muscles have been enlarged by exercise will reflect the shape of the muscles. But for people with ordinary muscle development, the upper arm is a useful proxy to how much fat the body has.
