Well, being elite artists probably they were on a controlled diet and exercised a lot, and anyway the URSS didn’t made easy to grow overweight before older ages as food intake outpaced dwindling muscles and mobility. Not that there wasn’t overweight people of all ages, but accessing enough food to grow a belly was difficult because supply of luxury items like sugary confections or junk snacks was always on the shorter side. That also made cavities in children quite less usual than in the West. ---
