Maybe I’m just daft and don’t understand the system…but…shouldn’t weapons rigs affect the displayed alpha damage of a ship ?

Or more to the point, they don’t. I mean, I can add a Medium Hybrid Burst Aerator to my Deimos, and the DPS increases as one would expect, but there is _no change whatever_ to the alpha damage…which remains at 2793 regardless. And its not just the Deimos. I notice the same for many of my ships.

So I am left wondering, is this something about alpha calculation I have not understood…or is this a bug ? Google AI says the alpha _should_ increase.

Would a slight increase in RoF actually do that? Or do you want the collision accelerator instead?

</div>

If you look at the description or attributes for these rigs, you will see that they increase the rate of fire, not the damage, there should be a different rig that increases damage.

For weapons there are two dps-increasing rig types.

One buffs rate of fire.
The other buffs your damage per shot, i.e. your ‘alpha damage’.

Make sure you’re not using the first if you’re looking for high alpha. The rate of fire rig generally does have slightly better dps than the other though.

Gosh…well, how to be in the game 4 years and still not know something. Yes, the collision accelerator increases the alpha to 2872. I would imaging a lot of players just use the burst aerator as it gives the slightly higher DPS.

Welcome to EVE (again). Which rig may be best (damage or ROF) can really depend on the weapon system. On missiles I prefer damage over ROF due to flight time, but ROF over damage on guns.

I have to say, the descriptions within the fitting windows are about as clear as mud. Nowhere does the description for collision accelerator specifically say ‘it increases the rate of fire’…and only by _comparing_ with the burst aerator is it apparent that there’s a difference. Like so many things in EVE…for example fitting T3 ships…its all clear and easy after its all clicked, but getting to that point is not made straightforward. I recall with my first T3 ship I had to reverse engineer someone else’s fitting to figure what to do. Or there’s my Loki fitting…it is not at all intuitive that a Loki makes such a good sniping ship.

Doesn’t it indicate damage on the module description?

Also a Damage Rig saves Ammo and Capacitor, compared to a RoF Rig. Important on certain fits that are short on cargo but want longer trips (Epic Arc or Event T3 Tengus for example). Or Amarr Laser Boats that face capacitor issues.

A RoF Rig on the other hand offers slightly better overall DPS and has less ‘overhead damage’, aka killing a ship with a shot that could have done 2000 damage, while the target has only 500hp left…

</div>

The 15% benefit to either damage or ROF is still a huge benefit. And with missiles or projectiles there’s no capacitor hit with ROF.

Yes but the collision accelerator says ‘increases turret damage’ but actually has a lower DPS than the burst aerator that says ‘increases rate of fire’. Yet the lower DPS one has the higher alpha.

</div>

Yes, I thought that was a given? Damage = alpha, ROF = more volleys. I use a T2 calefaction rig on my Golem because a higher ROF at longer ranges actually translates into less DPS (due to mussed volleys).

Things in EVE are always blindingly obvious _after_ you know them.

I think the real issue is that even after years in the game it is possible to have a really good, almost expert understanding, of _some_ things, yet remain completely oblivious of others. Donald Rumsfeld’s ‘unknown unknowns’. If you don’t know that you don’t know something…you’re only really going to encounter it when something changes or needs to change…as with my fitting.

</div>

Well…due to the above I also discovered the full use of the locus co-ordinator rig…which has increased the alpha of my sniping Zealot by 35% or so because crystals that were too short range to use now have the desired range…so I can now fit Gamma rather than Standard. That’s way more than the alpha increase for the Deimos.
