We would have to find a definition what a “good player” is to add some meaning to this statement.

And even before that, we might need to clarify what “being good in EVE Online” even means.

No doubt about that.

It explains perfectly well why you became a bittervet. Looks to me you couldn’t adapt to an evolving environment and now try to make it look like “the game is below my niveau and not worth my attention any more” - but in reality you and your mates simply couldn’t adapt to new techniques, new tactics and new strategies. So some did quit. And since you didn’t bother to make new friends you could learn from and evolve yourself, you found your niche in complaining about how bad everything is right now. Bitter and alone.
It all sounds like grandpa’s “stories from the war” which people are pretty tired of hearing over and over again. He would live a better life and make everyone happier by focusing on the present, his kids, his grandkids… instead of living in a past long gone and trying to tell everyone how much better everything was back then.

Why just not move on? Go look for another game where you can be amongst the top again? Why stay here and live in the past? If you want to stay, focus on the present. Use your experience to teach new players, forge new relations, build new groups, set new goals, invent new tactics, fittings, fleet compositions that might work today? There are _still_ loads of players around that are as good today as you and your mates were 15 years ago, I guarantee for that. You could learn from them if you like.

CCP is on the ropes, PA is trying to cut their losses. Not everyone thinks that the evolution of the game over the last few years is something that people have to overcome and adapt.

Many of us feel this is now a diamond in the rough. But its being managed by incompetence in the sense they seem focused on very short sighted profiteering.

You clearly enjoy the direction of the game. And I’m genuine pleased you are able to carve out an existence.

Maybe you’ve never donated hundreds or even thousands of hours of your time to build a community and organization within the game, only to see the custodians of that world could give a rats ass about community.

Your bias towards accepting that the past may have been better than the future is the divide. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong here but I do know that several other game communities have had their hubris knocked out of them when they decided to spool up a classic instance.

This game used to lack symmetry…in both design and in gameplay. This PA CCP seems committed to sanding down the edges, rounding off the corners and making it perfectly balanced IN THEIR EYES.

This game was a gem when it was less polished and was less concerned about dopamine dips . My personal humble opinion is the game lost its edge when it became perfectly symmetric.

That, and the aboslute stagnation of null as being status quo are the two greatest travesites.

CCP may be on the ropes (I believe none of us here is an expert in economics and has enough inside knowledge to do more than a wild guess here), but thats surely not becuase they messed up the development of EVE Online. They sunk dozens of millions in projects they then cancelled after years of development. Because they used to milk EVE Onlines profits for those side projects. EVE Online itself pretty much always was profitable, both to maintain and develop. And that says something about the quality of the game, it seems to have done well over like 20 years. Not a lot of competitors in this field.

> [@Rekindle](#):
>
> But its being managed by incompetence in the sense they seem focused on very short sighted profiteering.

I agree with that, but unfortunately that is how almost any business in the world is run today and there is almost nothing anyone can do about it. And more important: there is _no going back, ever_.

> [@Rekindle](#):
>
> You clearly enjoy the direction of the game. And I’m genuine pleased you are able to carve out an existence.

I do enjoy other things today than I enjoyed in the past. Both are equally important. While my joy in the early days came from strictly being a combat pilot and getting my thrill from outmaneuvering and outsmarting others _on grid_, today my field of expertise and employment within my group is _far wider_. I have _evolved_. I _grew up_. I can have _both_ today if I wish, I can join a fleet and be a combat pilot and do my job in a fleet of whatever size I like OR I can excel in the organization and development of an alliance, do strategic planning, logistic, write and maintain guides, hold traning sessions for newbros to share my excessive knowledge I amassed over the years and much more…

The potential is _still there_ to have fun on all fronts. But that requires at least _to play the game_ instead of complaning from the sideline.

> [@Rekindle](#):
>
> My personal humble opinion is the game lost its edge when it became perfectly symmetric.

I don’t believe it is perfectly symmetric. At least WH space where I live in is _full_ of asymmetric encounters, traps and tricks and baits and fakes. Thirdpartying and small gangs of really professional players taking on much larger gangs of casuals or not-so-organized groups - and winning. If null sucks, simply don’t live there. I didn’t want to live in null even 15 years ago when it was “so much better” (according to your statements). It was a stupid blobspace full of egomaniacs and grinding carebears back then and it hasn’t really changed in this department.

> [@Rekindle](#):
>
> That, and the aboslute stagnation of null as being status quo are the two greatest travesites.

This is the players choice. Nobody hinders anyone to go for an all-out war against someone else. The nullblocks have _more than enough_ resources and army stockpiles to do so. They simply _don’t want to fight_ any more, because they realized that _cooperation is always superior to confrontation_ in the long run. So they made agreements. Pacts. Terms. That solified their positions and made sure newcomers and troublemakers (those who still _want to fight_) don’t get into a threatening position. Thats politics. And EVE largely is a political simulator, not a combat simulator. Only a narrow-minded person would mistake EVE for a sci-fi-shooter.

I agree that certain game mechanics favour and encourage the stagnation we currently see and I _do argue for changing them_.

> [@Rekindle](#):
>
> Maybe you’ve never donated hundreds or even thousands of hours of your time to build a community and organization within the game

All the corpmates and alliance mates knowing my work in the past few years would laugh at that statment. I am just not running around bragging about it. Real work is done silently. And “things getting done” is reward enough.

I think a good start would be to more firmly divorce nullsec from lowsec, allowing lowsec playstyles to flourish. Not everybody wants to join a bubbled tidi blob, some people would rather duel with fancy frigates and pods.

I think specifically, restrictions on the movements of large ships, from nullsec to and across lowsec should be discouraged. This would create more divergence, and opportunity for lowsec pirates to harass large fleets in transit.

It should be more difficult to teleport from Highsec to nullsec, without passing through lowsec. This would balance the game more evenly and give lowsec more vitality. I think cynos are good to have in the game, but their use in lowsec should be less frequent, as small group PvP is nerfed whenever CCP caters to nullsec.

If all I have to choose from are lazy players, I’ll stick to solo thank you very little. Last thing I need are lazy corp m8’s,like yourself apparently.

I did that. All it did was make me fuzzy. What a waste of time. I still cannot believe some posters on the forum talked me into that. Your more naive than I am.

> [@Syzygium](#):

I did and I am. EVE ruined all other games for me because I had to learn so much to be good at it, I now just kill other lazy games where you just want to “chill”.

To what end? Why bother when there is still no challenge?

Chill players seem to run the game. CCP is happy with that. Sorry that I’m not…

Seems like we can be happy you don’t play any more, you would have taken over the whole universe, if it hadn’t been just too boring…

It saddens me to hear that there is simply no one left in EVE that plays on your level and proves a challenge to your skills.
But then the question remains: why wasting precious time u could use to dominate the top ranks of other games with your godlike skills by lurking here at the EVE forums, a game that has nothing to offer for you any more because everyone else is so far below you that you don’t even bother playing?

It says, I joined this game October 26, 2022. But maybe that is just the first time I posted on this forum, because I swear I joined in the Spring of 22. Well back on topic of missing stuff here. While I do wish for some more recent changes to disappear, I miss the pre-photon UI it looked cleaner than the Photon UI. I would still love to see the “Docking” splash to at least have an opt out option.

What I miss the most, is the fear. I guess that is what you call it. Maybe you forgot about the fear? Back when you first start out, 30 days new, and everyone in chat is telling you horror stories about getting ganked around ever corner, you cautiously watch your ship jump through 9 or 10 gates, biting your nails that your venture loaded with kernite will get through to Jita.

Of course, now I know all that is 96% bullpatties, but the not knowing was a little fun. Also having billions of ISK on hand makes you think, what was I afraid of? I can afford a fleet of haulers and miners now. I would make a new character and start over, but I can’t forget the knowledge that I am pretty safe in whatever you do.

Fly safe and stay alert o7

As already explained: I exchange lifetime for fun. And it works pretty well with EVE Online.

What would even be a measurement of “how good” someone is in a game?

I can beat most games on the highest difficulty level or getting a Platinum Trophy on the Playstation 🤣. That usually brings me within the Top 1% to Top 0.1% (depending on the game and the design of the trophy ^^) of the players playing that game. Is that “good”? Or do I need to win international tournaments?

What is a reasonable measurement of “how good” someone is in EVE Online?

[Offering help](https://forums.eveonline.com/t/bruce-mining-school-program/478934) has been an uphill battle. I spoke to Mike about it, he told me he is just hard headed and stubborn. Mike steps into rookie chat and all the ISD know him, I guess being here +10 years helps a lot.

“Hey people, John here just saying I am over at the school handing out fully fitted ventures.”

I keep getting told to shut the f\*k up by even people who I am trying to assist.

Crazy huh?

Well I don’t know, just picked 2013 because it was the peak year, but it was also the break year. So a few years earlier might be better, I just started 2 years later so I got no idea.
