I hate to say this but it seems CCP is doing exactly that, replacing player interaction with NPC’s. I’m talking about all the new NPC’s added to the game within the past 5 years.

Are you talking about how Triglavians and Edencom add more danger to high sec by attacking players?

I agree, it’s indeed similar, but in the case of triglavians it is _in addition_ to player interaction rather than _replacing_ player interaction, as those NPCs aren’t competing with the dangers that come from players in high sec.

NPC miners for hire would be in direct competition with player miners and would replace player interaction for people who wish to buy ores but don’t want to mine or interact with players to get it.

Not really. CCP nerfed wars and various forms of baiting so much over the years that there was a fairly marked decrease in destruction-driven consumption. While ganking increased in volume over that period (for lack of alternatives), it was unable to keep up with material inflation. Compensating with deadly NPCs was CCP’s roundabout way of correcting this mistake without making it seem to PvE farmers that the grief faucet was being turned on full-blast again. Triglavians, scarcity, new ship components—none of this stuff would’ve been necessary if there was parity between production and consumption, but for nearly a decade there hasn’t been, and the game was literally imploding on itself.

I disagree.

I think CCP put all the new NPC’s into the game to make Eve look more alive due to the steady drop in player log-ins. Main intention is to help create more destruction.

Luckily CCP noticed that the balance between production and destruction was off and did something about it.

Regardless of the reason, EVE looking more alive due to new NPCs and more destruction are both good for the game in my opinion.

Trust me, they knew for a very long time. They just didn’t want to eat the frog and do something about it because they knew there would be tears and a mass exodus the moment they did (and in fact this is exactly what happened every time they tried, e.g. blackout and scarcity).

Nature experts tell people not to feed wild animals because of how it can upset the ecosystem. If you hand-feed a bunch of squirrels for a long time, and then suddenly stop, you’re going to wind up with a bunch of squirrel corpses because they get stupid and lazy and forget how to forage for their own food. Catering to PvE farmers in games seems to have the same effect. When you give them concessions and bring up their status, attempting to revert to the baseline will be met with more resistance than there would be in merely attempting to maintain the baseline.

That’s why we got Trigs and diamond rats and whatever else instead of making everyone war-eligible again.

Like I said earlier, CCP is replacing player interaction with NPC’s. In fact the new AI even surprised them:

That’s just cray.

Though one day. Maybe not too far in the future. They’ll be really surprised when my bot fleet takes on their bot fleet and kicks their ass.

They’ll be angry at first. But then the bean counters will point out that I’m paying for 43 subs and all will be good.

Suggestion: Leave mining the way it is, but allow for an active mode using the hacking minigame. Successful hacks (could call it beam remodulation to make it thematically align) would give a bonus to ore yield or reduce the cycle time.

This has some major benefits for the overall economy. The first is it cuts down on the ability for bots to take advantage of mining to the degree they currently are. Secondly, an active mining mode makes multi-boxing less viable.

This still allows for people to mindlessly mine while bsing with people or watching netflix / youtube. However, it would give active miners an edge in terms of the overall market share they can take part in. This is potentially good for newer players. And also people who like to hunt miners.

Not a bad idea. If you make it work on cycle time then that also excludes drone mining meaning less competition from super passive/afk miners.

Great idea!

Well, maybe not the hacking game itself as it doesn’t make much sense thematically, but the idea to have an ‘active mining mode’ next to the regular passive mining is good.

I’d love to be able to increase yield by paying attention.

It’s already there, in a sense, at least if not mining with an orca or rorq but with a barge or exhumer. To optimize the yield over time on the strip miners on those mickey mouse asteroids it suffices to use the survey scanner and follow the progress on the asteroid being mined, do a bit of arithmetics - and shut down the mining tool when the roid should be finished instead of letting the cycle run its full course. It hurts the crystals a bit more, but it saves time. Awake and calculating 😁

It’s something, but not much. That only saves time when mining small rocks and only saves you one cycle of one strip miner. It barely compares to the extra bonus you have compared to a semi-afk miner who sometimes floats in space mining nothing as their rock is gone and they’re not aware yet.

Hi Duella.

In truth, I think at least half the playerbase wants to tell other folks what they should do…

…and the rest would rather be told what to do than find out for themselves.

People were gun-mining drones for quite a while for minerals.

That got changed, because the intention was to have at least some subset of players actually do mining.

And the truth is - some players DO enjoy mining.
