Old Spacer’s Prayer (Author Unknown - Ancient Sol Lore)
Dear Lord,
You know that I don’t believe in you much, but I hope you keep an eye out for me and my mates all the same.
May Cherenkov radiation never be found close to our habitat module, and if our spacecraft should tumble, may we recover quickly and point to our primary so that we can find our orientation using pulsars or other suitable markers.
For F=ma and objects in motion will follow their curves in space-time unless acted upon by an outside force. So please protect us from orbiting matter, be it big or small, natural or man-made. As our module’s walls are thin and our radiators are large and vulnerable.
And if you see fit to take any of us or our ship today, please remember; John owes me forty bucks and I want to be able to spend it before I die!
All those gathered said, Amen.
There’s a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can’t take part. You can’t even passively take part. And you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop. And you’ve got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at all.
