Remember the "dedicated balance team" ccp promised last summer? CSM member reveals ccp ***canned it

but it’s runing in circles. RW is not succesful so CCP won’t throw a dev time to improve it? Not to mention RW is not succesful because CCP made false assumtion about their playerbase and/or RW are flawed design from the start (I don’t even talk about huge elephant in the room - rewards).

At least for Resource Wars, I think the apparently low player uptake is really due to the rewards. It’s the same problem Drifter Incursions had - if you introduce new PvE to the game next to existing ones that have been completely min/maxed the will be largely ignored. Despite what some claim, the vast majority of players just want to feel like they are “winning” and will take safe and boring over new and more risky everytime.

Some at CCP know this as they have clearly made some new features either extremely safe (see: Upwell structures) or overly lucrative (see: Rorqual rebalance) when they want to juice uptake numbers. Other teams, seems genuinely surprised when players ignore new riskier/unknown PvE options and players keep grinding the same things because the new stuff pays less at more risk than the stuff they know.

Either CCP has to find some fortititude and be willing to rebalance rewards (especially things the players have mastered and a now farming efficiently for more income than was originally intended), or pull a Rorqual and at least release the new stuff in a far too lucrative state so players jump on it and then tone it back.

The lack of an economic overseer for New Eden has really become apparent in recent years. CCP Quant does a great job monitoring things, but the game really needs a dedicated economist keeping the devteams in check and step in when certain things get so out of balance they make running some content such a bad economic choice no one does it.

To be fair, even when they had a dedicated economist, they still designed T3 production with material bottlenecks. And then didn’t even attempt to rebalance them until years later, and still didn’t use a bottleneck-proof design. I assume having an economist on staff was just a novelty/publicity stunt. I mean, he must have quit for a reason, right?

The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they know about what they imagine they can design.–F. A. Hayek

So what is the behind-the-scenes process for deciding what NEW projects to devote dev time to??

Agency, RW, moon mining, FOBs, frig Whs, etc etc

The reason for stopping Captian Quarters was exactly what you said: low use.

I get that and get what you are saying about if the new stuff doesnt get used, they will iterate less on it.

Yet who the ■■■■ puts these wild ass ideas like Agency and RWs into WHOSES mind to ask the board for in the first place?

Csm? I dont remember us Capsuleers answering any survey?
Ccp seagull from home? Reddit/r/eve? These forums? (Lol yeah right)

Where and who decidices?

The balance team wasn’t only about pvp. It was about game balance on the whole. CCP Seagull outlined it here:

Then in the first CSM Summit last year (page 33), http://cdn1.eveonline.com/community/csm/Meetings/summit/CSM12-S1.pdf

Nothing in there is pvp specific. It was always about balance on the whole, which is for all aspects of the game.

A lot of it likely comes from brainstorming sessions of ‘ok, so we want to do X… how do we do that?’

Then, hypothetically… people come up with ideas, they start looking at how feasible the ideas are, work up a few internal mock-ups and frameworks, and then those things spur further development, often along the lines of ‘hey, you know what we could do…’

Wouldn’t be at all unique to CCP. If you stop to mother-may-I with the players at every step, you’ll never get anything developed.

Maybe that’s where CCP’s at now. No more Jesus features, so instead, a bunch of Jesus features banged out over a weekend and abandoned without the time investment to be worthwhile.

@Jin_taan I never claimed they do not develop pve. I said they have not done design passes on mining. Mining causes the multiboxing, which has a direct effect on free to play expansions.

Removing multiboxing on miners, opens up huge population increases for eve, especially if the rework of mining forces people to pay attention (which should be the key mechanic in removing multiboxing from mining). IT also provides a removal of the inflation of eve.

this will increase eves population by increasing the possible access of alpha toons (maybe moving it in the direction of being fully free to play). higher population rates mean that the game will get more money, which means we will have things like balance teams on good budgets.

Too many hands pawing and tugging on a baby makes a baby cranky and irritable.

Eve in its infancy was a baby with a crown. Now its a bitter adult with a crappy attitude.

No offense intended CCP. You let the players do this.

I take back everything I said about you before. This is gold.

How did the players do this? Im being serious here. Im not sure how we got rid of the balance team as well as not allocating time to finish tiercide ect. Not to mention walking on stations did we pitch the idea implement 1/100 of it and then drop it?

Obviously the analogy was a general one.

It no where states the players did anything.

You stated it was the players fault. Im just asking how its the player base at blame.

Meh. Understanding where power resides should offer a clue.

The power comes from the wallet. We pay into CCP. CCP does what they want with the money. They determine where it goes.

They actually delivered on most of what asked for with Agency, Sotiyo, and FoB. :smirk:

Which leads me to think that if the problem is that the rewards are insufficient then CCP should nerf the hell out of almost everything else. :grinning:

Edit: CCP post like 6-7 down (#187 lol)
