Without being compressed ore sells at a low price, even in Jita. Some systems have public refineries that can compress, but not everywhere. Should I sub a second account for compression? Or just solo mine in an Orca? Is the lack of compression on mining ships why so many Orcas are in high‑sec—they can compress themselves? (I saw 8 in a Kernite anomaly today.) Lets discuss or not.
kernite is useless compressed
Omber and Kernite are maybe the only two ores that are completely void of value when compressed compared to uncompressed.
I am all for modules on ships. I would not mind it. But I am still irked by the no survey scanner for any ship. The removal of content is where the game starts making me lose interest in playing. I will remind CCP ( yeah, like they read this stuff ) I am a casual gratuitous player. Which means other than massive bouts of boredom, nothing keeps me here. I have a movie to finish watching.
Yeah, it’s a step backwards to make the survey scanner ship-specific. Plus the new mining surveyor feels anticlimactic—you click it and the asteroids just change color, which isn’t helpful. You still have to right-click and view the scan results to get any real info. But i digress.
I remember ya back in the day, when compression was batch compression on rorqual. That was it. It is great quality of life to have access to it with an indy command ship. The way I look at it, find a friends/corp to do mining with that has compress in their fleet. Or start another account and skill them into boosting and compression.
Not great ideas, but train your current character so they can do a prop with compression, then shuttle stuff to station as you mine, at the end of the day get in the prop undock compress and dock back up. Honestly this is not great and a waste of skill points imo.
Personally I say find friends to go mining with! Mining with friends make it better, friends just make this game better!
I agree, but you and your friends could still be ninja mining or huffing in ventures or their T2 version, and still have acess to compression by both sacrificing a mid slot for said module. Even just one of you could do the compression and the other jettisons the gas and you scoop it up.
Wether or not this will make porp obsolete i dont know, it still has some powerful command boosts and can provide compression without the need to jettison ore so the fleet can fit other modules in the mid slot instead.
This is also why i would like to propose a mid slot module that increases the range of mining lasers. Lets call it an Asteroid Tracking Computer / Mining Guidance System.
Correct. Uncompressed ore has two possible routes:
refine into minerals if used locally in industry (minerals are harder to move)
compress so that it can be refined elsewhere
Compression has no cost, but makes it significantly easier for whoever is buying the ore to move it elsewhere to trade or use in their industry setup. In other words, there’s little reason to trade uncompressed ore and the few times you see it on market are exceptions.
Your choice. As you have noticed many structures have compression so it’s not mandatory. I can compress but I rarely use a ship for it for this reason.
Solo mining in an Orca sounds pretty boring as it means you’re mining in HS.
The reason so many Orcas mine in high sec is because they have a large ore hold and plenty of tank that only very few players can kill them, which allows for very low effort mining. Compression changes nothing about it, people used those Orcas there too when they offered no in-space compression yet.
Outside HS people much more rarely use Orcas. But even in null sec I sometimes see people use Orcas on moons, and then specifically for their ability to compress. After all a Porpoise offers near-similar mining command bursts with much less risk.
This is a bad idea. I’d spend time explaining why if I knew you to be the kind of person to listen to explanations instead of doubling down.
Again, a bad idea.
If you want compression while huffing gas you can bring a Porpoise. Or just realize you may have to fly twice in your Prospect to huff the entire cloud on your own. The clouds often aren’t that big.
Funny thing, when the Pioneer’s new bonuses were announced I calculated I could get 110km mining laser range with them with implants and Rorqual boosts. Even with a Porpoise you get 85km. That’s well beyond it’s default targeting range and likely more than you will ever need.
I don’t think mining ships need additional range.
But if you do wish to have extra mining range, try the new Pioneer! The Hulk isn’t a bad alternative either.
