Dear CCP, I want to be a miner as a solo player, but it feels like the system is designed to punish me

I suspect this is why you sat docked while your corp was offline in null sec, and why you dislike null sec gameplay.

Many of us do know what ships pose which kinds of threats based on the hull name alone that we see on dscan.

For those players who do know a bit more about the game using dscan is an invaluable tool to know what’s happening in space around us, and a way to stay alive while we are undocked.

Of course you could simply dock up whenever any ship appears, but this isn’t the most efficient use of your time.

Of course you could play Chess without knowing all the moves every piece makes, just with trial and error and an opponent telling you if your moves are legitimate, but being content with such a lack of knowledge on the game won’t make you a good Chess player.

Likewise better players in EVE will realize they can recognise threats based on ship hull names on dscan. A Flycatcher can use an interdiction bubble, an Arazu has long warp disruptors and can light cynos, a Proteus on a gate may be trying to smartbomb your shuttle… It’s experience you get while playing the game.

Of course you could ‘play the game’ by mining in HS, without looking at dscan and ignoring ship names, but this is not how the majority of players plays EVE.

I’ve explained that to you- that was back when I had one ship- a Hurricane and didn’t know what I was doing- had no ISK, and no mentorship. After losing that ship, I left and went back to High Sec. Shortly after, I quit the game. Things are different now, but I still hate Null. I can clearly afford to lose ships now, but I just see no carrot worth the stick in Null. To me, it’s like self-destructing my ships for no damn reason.

Maybe they will live longer now that you know D-scan isn’t just for j-space, though?

Again… why? “Go to Null!” Why? I’ve been there. I’ve been there multiple times. I’ve been in J-space. I’ve seen it. There is no carrot worth the stick.

I don’t think poking fun at your inability to leave highsec without (apparently) your ships spontaneously self-destructing for no damn reason is the same thing as advising you to go to null.

A few weeks ago, I took a 500m ISK ship over 30 jumps into Null, flew around for an hour, then flew back all the while posting screenshots of my entire journey and broadcasting on these forums what my destination was.

I don’t mind losing ships. But I am not going to live in an area that I don’t find enjoyable. Ask @Gerard_Amatin . He saw the thread and all of the screenshots I was posting as I was taking them.

Yes, and we all feel a little bit of sympathetic embarrassment on your behalf every time you bring it up.

What the hell do you all want from me? “Go to null!” I went to Null. “Get out of Null” I leave.

In the last year I’ve solo flown several ships through Null and even joined a fleet of a 1,200 ships through null.

It’s never enough for you people.

We want you to join Frat and mine for them instead.

I can’t. I have deleted my entire Email and communication log and therefore have no ESI info to offer. I keep all communications and emails private and will never ever give them up in a corporate application. They get deleted almost immediately after being read. My ESI is pretty much the definition of a spy.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I think it would be cool if you stopped posting a ton of misinformation about parts of the game you have no meaningful experience with.

I could not care less what area of space you play in.

Buddy I assure you there is nothing about your ESI data that anyone in any large bloc organization would find even remotely interesting. Eve recruitment scrutiny is 99% a meme. I have alts I haven’t logged into in an age that are now in WinterCo completely by accident. One of them even has roles!

And, to be clear, I’m not saying “Go join Frat”. You shouldn’t, Frat sucks. I AM saying your, “But muh ESI!” excuse is comical nonsense. Nobody cares about your Evemails, and why would they? Do you think Eve spies are sending OTP-encoded eve-mails about enemy fleet movements or something?

It was meant to be comical. No carrot. Too much stick.

This might be a relevant thing to say if I cared where you played, but I still don’t.

You guys are so great at derailing threads with pointless personal squabbles, this must be the premiere PVP activity.. meanwhile, solo mining these hidden ore sites is still no bueno. For a class of ships intended to ninja mine it’s rather unrewarding and actually a waste of time hunting down hidden ore anoms in LS or NS on a prospect or endurance only to be shut down by random NPC spawns. Bad design is bad.

Then why are NullSec players able to afford Titans and Supercapitals on a regular basis? I mean, those alliances there have thousands of them, you know that, right? They are objectively the richest players in the whole game and it seems related to the space they live in.

If that’s your goal, then set your skill plan to support it. Drones will defend you from most NPC rats, but it’s not something you can do well whilst AFK.
I only use D-Scan for hunting. Use Local, check for kills on the Map. Be wary and always align yourself.
These are relatively low effort and reasonably safe. (You are never completely safe, unless docked…maybe)

The system isn’t designed to punish anyone. CCP has set forth rules and consequences those who attack ships simply traveling through a system that is considered safe. Those who violate the rules suffer ship loss and podding, which pales in comparison to the loss incurred by the miner.

My best suggestion is, set all known High Sec ganker corps and alliances to -10 and use UedamaScout - Twitch to monitor popular ganker system activity.

UedamaScout’s Twitch channel is a very good channel. Connect to the Twitch channel using your phone or tablet then mine away. AFK mining as it is called is usually someone who has stepped away from mining due to an emergency that does not necessitate docking up.

Or for whatever reason, maybe washing dishes or cleaning the floor while mining, it’s an efficiency thing, a person choosing to do two things at once.

The status alert system that merely creates a sound to inform the miner or mission runner that gankers are in system is a necessary action. Not only to ensure ganker tears are collected but also a vision health thing. There isn’t any damage being done to the gamers vision by AFK’ing, but being glued to the screen while mining does create vision issues.

Blah, blah, blah, just dock up then is the excuse always given.

you can solo mine all you want…
But mining is for manufacturing…not making direct isk…

Why are you trying to be a victim and dependent on what others say the price is?

Mining is for manufacturing, which is then sold on the market for direct ISK.

Try using the Tholos as a Covert Ops cloaked mining vessel. You won’t be able to mine a large amount, but instant cloaking and warping away will surely miff the gankers off.

The Tholos is basically a versatile combat that ship that is able to mine, rat belts, raid ESS and run Data and Relic sites in Null. Simply take a mobile depot along and fit accordingly.

The Cenotaph is the larger version.

Exploration missions using a Proteus supported by Cenotaph and Tholos is a very deadly combination. The Tholos and Cenotaph are also great support for mining in any designation of space.

O, the indignity.
