I have written an app to make getting data out of the ESI easier. Check it out, and let me know when you break it 
It supports caching, rate limiting, paged requests, and authentication.
I only run Linux these days, so I don’t have any windows/mac cli examples. Let me know if its hard to figure out for those systems.
