Socketkill.com - Feature Recap

Good Morning,

I noticed a reoccurance of a “what the hell am I looking at” questions, so I thought I would write a full QA and run through the detailed features available to you should you wish to use the web site.

As I mentioned before thank you for voting for me in the creator awards, I never expected or liked the idea of being public or anything like that, but to be able to say to people I won the first ever new developer of the year award is an amazing feeling so thank you for that.

To begin with when I originally established the idea, it occurred to me its pretty cool to have it performing so fast but you end up with a spam fest of dead pods, so how do we make that more manageable and configurable.

So the result is a live filter, so if you want to monitor all losses in Jita as you sit there? you can now, all goon losses where ever they go? Yes its possible.

Second feature is the right hand side

Essentially an analytical layout of all kills based on your configuration, so all losses in black rise since 0001 UTC?

This will generate that.

The idea behind it is simply reusing the data that has arrived into an analytical situation, seeing how many battleships have died in your region since 0001 UTC - that’s entirely possible now.

Recently established a OBS URL for all you crazy streamers out there

The site now generates its own loss mails also, each loss that flies past is clickable.

We have a rolling top 10

So you have some questions?

Dex whats with all the green and non descript UI?

Well when I was a kid I loved the alien franchise, and the atmosphere and feel to the franchise fuses quite well with eve online, so I thought that was a pretty cool thing to do, turns out it looks pretty sweet? In the original iterations I did over commit a bit and the CSS gave me some indecipherable stuff, but it turned out quite nice, surprisingly difficult to find a balance between presentation and style.

That’s all lovely Dex but isn’t it just another kill board?

I did my best to stay away from that description, we already have zkill and eve kill so 3 is a crowd in this case, purely focused on performance and seeing what was possible based on the latest tech available.

I want to see a kill mail from 2 weeks ago, not really possible considering how fast the kill mails fly past?

I deliberately designed the URL for ease of use, at the moment the loss mails have the following URL’s - so simply swap out the number and you can see whatever KM you like, there may be some misfires from time to time but that’s purely based on ESI auth availability.

This all sounds very final Dex, does this mean you aren’t going to do anything else with the site?

Well it occurred to me literally about an hour ago that there are some elements of the site that are in place that have kind of been neglected because I have been busy coming up with new ideas, so all energy will be focusing on refining and optimizing instead of adding, so how you see the site at the moment will just be a better version of how it is, or “feature polish” as an actual professional would call it.

This is weird, why isn’t there any monetization parts to it?

Well the site is designed specifically to be sustainable, back end operates on a very tiny VM and consists of no onboard database, so its very sustainable in nature, only form of monetization is a markee dragon code “socketkill” which I was encouraged to get recently. Going to add the friend link etc but that’s down the bottom of the dev list right now. I have submitted my application for partner as I have met all the relevant requirements.

The background art is very sweet where did you get that from?

Background art on the main site is a collection of screenshots from Rixx, the killmails and stats sites are a collection of over 100 of Elo Georges magnificent water colour paintings, thank you to both of you for allowing me to utilize them to make it a bit more presentable and hiding my poor attempts and trying to do front end (yes I still hate it)

I am a front end dev and the visuals are pretty sweet whats it based on?

The front end element originally with vanilla JS, but I found as I continued to add and iterate the complexity because a bit overwhelming for one person, additionally there was just something missing, kinda felt a bit cheap? subsequently I converted to a combination of svelte and astro with tailwind to try and make the front end aesthetics a bit more appealing.

Guessing you are going to hit us all with a discord bot next?

No, there are 197 discord kill bots, no reason to add another that 4 people use out of courtesy, plus discord library is awful to work with so I would hate my life trying do do that, I have implemented something which bypasses that, just a small extension to the backend which fires categorizations of losses to an announcement channel, follow that channel and you have your loss mails.

Why would I want to use this?

Well the purpose of the site is recent stuff, want to see what’s currently ongoing I have the rendering speed down to sub millisecond, so latency is essentially non existent right now, the purpose of the site is not to be a replacement for any kill boards, its purpose is to compliment.

I would like to support this site as I have been using it for hunting the region I am in?

Toss me some ISK to support my Loki losses, or use the Markee dragon code, no other interests personally.

I have an idea and I want to pass it on that would be quite a nice addition?

Discord link is on the web site, get in touch, otherwise in game would be quite handy and we can see if its viable?

I am a dev and would like to integrate something onto my own app?

The web socket that supports the site is currently whitelist based to protect bandwidth consumption, there are currently multiple users at the moment, happy to add you on there if you like.

I recently realised the visibility of the site deserved a bit of explanation, subsequently I hope some of the information clears up any confusion

As ever, thank you for your votes and support, and please enjoy the site. Feedback and ideas are always welcome and listened too, I hope that this is something that you will all use and consider valuable.

Dex

Nice, always good to have an app that helps players with Eve…

Thank you very much for taking the time to create it and more importantly, for sharing it with the Eve community..
