Hello EVE intellectuals,

Hello EVE intellectuals,
What is your definition of conflict in EVE and what do you think drives it? Ive got my own ideas but you go first. Lets discuss or not.
Rather than looking for what drives conflict, I’d say conflict is what drives EVE. The nature of that conflict is less relevant than that you find it fun, whether it’s competition in the market, between alliances, between individual players, in the end it keeps us logging in, and keeps us buying (and blowing up) ships. EVE without conflict isn’t fun, just look at Serenity (Chinese server) and all the refugees fleeing its boring blue donut to play with us on Tranquility instead.
I see. Conflict is the nature of life. No conflict no life. But I feel we have to be more specific. What exactly is conflict and why does it happen? Sorry if it’s a stupid question
Conflict is the basis, the sole cornerstone of EVE. Even when people talk about cooperation and friendship (yuck), it all boils down to conflict, as you need cooperation and “friends” to survive the other people’s assault against you who use their cooperation and “friends” to try and overpower your efforts.
Without conflict, EVE collapses, as it has nothing else to offer. The economy collapses as no production is consumed (destroyed), player groups collapse (out of boredom as ISK making only gets you so far as motivation), the gameplay collapses (without conflict there’s no reason to be in space for PVE or PVP purposes).
What’s interesting is that CCP over time has sort of removed some conflict drivers that were truly emergent. Like the OTEC cartel. They replaced that with watered-down, fake conflict drivers that only create frustration instead of compelling narratives.
Im looking for a definition of conflict and what the neccerary ingredients are for it to happen.
Im leaning towards one of the ingredients is “ownership”. With little or no ownership there is little or no conflict. But this seems to raise the question of what is ownership and what it looks like in EVE.
Owning space or exerting influence over a part of space (works really well in NPC null sec) is one conflict driver. Following a (however misguided it may be) believe or principle is another (like James 315 and organized ganking in high sec). Spite, retribution, injured pride, lacking self-confidence are others. Espionage and subterfuge and social engineering are yet others. Basically, human nature is the fundamental conflict driver of it all.
I am starting to understand what drives conflict. It is the presence of ownership/property and the ability to take or earn someones else’s property.
For example the coming Prismatisites (see what i did there..?) will not drive conflict because you can’t own them. Any fighting you do will earn you little as another attacker could swing by any moment. If you are the attacker and you win the fight you still have to mine everything yourself and protect against other attackers.
tl;dr No-one owns or earns anything by fighting over the site so it wont drive conflict. But let’s see.
If for example prismaticite only spawned in C6 wormholes then there would be an incentive to fight over and own C6 wormholes.
As far as I know people already fight over and own C6 systems, I don’t think these systems are in need of more incentives.
I think if the value of for example C6 wormholes are increased it will drive more conflict over them
It just means whoever is holding them right now will earn more money, if they even care to spend time on the new ore instead of their C6 income.
Prismaticite only spawning in C6 will not make current inhabitants richer per say. In order to mine it they would have to stop farming blue loot. If they do both by multiboxing then they also increase their risk.
Currently prismaticite is going to spawn randomly in low and null, so even if they are visible on map, it will likely be whoever has a staging area closest to a spawn that ends up mining in it.
No problem.
With merciful regards

Don’t discriminate against the neurodivergent. EVE is meant to be a safe space for NPD and ASPD.
seems to be a normalisation of idiocy these days…….Keep it up.
Idiots are people too.
Well this is a game so conflict in EVE is entertainment. What drives it depends on the player: egotism/insecurity; competitiveness (vs oneself or others, healthy or unhealthy); the sci-fi fantasy of being a tropey space pilot; the desire to create or grow; the aesthetic engagement with the fictional universe; the satisfaction of having a goal, building the architecture to achieve it, and meeting milestones; perhaps even simple stress management.
Conflict is the disharmony which results when people disagree with me.
My definition of conflict in EvE? Ships go BRRRRRRRT and things explode because people get jollies out of it. I sell the things to the exploder and explodee. They go pew pew, boom and I go ka-ching! Without conflict I’m out of business.
What do you use the money for?
