Los Brincos - Lola (1967)

This would be the last hit from the Spanish band Los Brincos once the Pardo brothers left the band to pursue their careers on their own. “Lola” was the summer hit* for 1967 and was massively popular which explains why it has been earworming me for three days in a row…

*in Spain the summer hits used to be THE song, each year would have one well into the 1990s when music tastes began splitting into narrower niches and music radios got competition from internet

Queen - Another one bites the dust (1980)

This one is about a man who’s been left behind by a romantic partner, and then the matter just had to remind me of another song with the same topic, also from a british band, but a different time and style…

Herman’s Hermits - No milk today (1967)

This one might need a bit of context, “no milk today” was a sign homeowners would hang on the door to tell the milkman to not drop fresh milk that day, and in the context of this song means how now that he’s alone he won’t spend so much milk and the only the world knows of his misfortune is that harmless sign on the door. This whole theme of “my home was better with her” is further stressed when the lyrics say “just two up two down”, refering to a common layout of common terraced houses, two rooms below, two upstairs, his ordinary house no longer is like a palace without his queen. Oh and of course in 1967 “gay” meant “merry, funny”.

This mortal coil - Song to the siren (1983)

The song has aged well, even if it doesn’t pulls the same strings as it used to do, at least for me. The video… well… it hasn’t aged so well but this remastered audio with random graphics does the trick.
