Basically I learned ( early on ) beacons are not bacon, they are trouble. I found a wormhole beacon and visually there is a wormhole with a metal collar around it. Nasty NPCs known as drifters build wormholes and they blow you up quick, if you get too close. I steer clear of beacons, unless I am in my corvette, pod, or some other ship I can afford to lose.
