The scan strength of sisters combat probes seem really low compared to sisters cores. Yet when I use them, I don’t seem to have difficulties in scanning down level IV signatures in my exploration frigate. When I look at combat probes, they seem to have very poor strength and on top of that you can’t go below 0.5 AU. Is there something I am missing?
Combat probes are for scanning ships and such more so than sites
Core probes can’t find anything but sigs, for everything else, there’s combat probes.
Your current scan strength is modified by the range you scan at.
If you scan at 0.25 AU with 40 base scan strength, scanning a twice as large range of 0.5 AU is equivalent to scanning with half (20) scan strength. It results in half the scan result too.
Regular probes have a smallest base scan range of 0.25 AU and a base strength of 40.
Combat probe base range is 0.5 AU, these cannot scan smaller at 0.25 AU. At 0.5 AU combat probes have a base strength of 20, which is equivalent to regular probes at 0.5 AU.
This is the most confusing part: CCP seems to have given regular and combat probes the same effective strength but the one in the UI is compared to a different base range which gives the wrong impression combat probes are much worse.
I still want to test it myself but according to EVE uni they’re equally strong. Edit: Tested, they are equally strong.
Next, combat probes can scan up to 64 AU, where regular probes stop at 32 AU.
At all ranges between 0.5 AU and 32 AU combat probes and regular probes are equally strong, besides the fact that regular probes cannot scan down combat targets like ships and deployables.
Regular probes have a couple of advantages: the regular probe launcher is much easier to fit than the expanded probe launcher that combat probes need, and if you ever still have trouble scanning down a signature at ranges as small as 0.5 AU the regular probes can double your scan strength by going down to a 0.25 AU scan which combat probes cannot do.
Ohhhh thanks.
