Ships get new looks every now and then. Some people hate how new ship model looks like.
I propose that you could use old ship models as skin purchase. You would need to be docked when you activate old ship model skin.

Good luck with your suggestion, though I think this would be canned by the art teams that have to maintain the textures.
Learn how skins work, then you’ll see why this simply can’t be done.
They would have to keep both models up to date, when a lot of the reason for updating models is because the old model was low res or missing features the new graphics systems can use.
