To help with new player retention I think CCP should have a short questionnaire during character creation asking the player what attracted them to EVE and what kind of gameplay they are interested in. Based on the answers the player provides the tutorial should change to cater the player.
For example a Player who is interested in PvP could get a tutorial that explains faction warfare in more detail and recommends the player join a militia or faction warfare corporation. While a player interested in exploration might get a tutorial explaining the galaxy map in more detail and how to use probe scanners.
This could lead to players finding a purpose or a trade in EVE sooner and help during the 1st few hours they are interacting with New Eden.
