Eve Launcher on Linux (Lutris) not working after launcher update 5/08/2025

I stated before, this could be a “game over” situation for many Linux users. I know I will get messed with for explaining this but most ( not all ) game companies work this methodology.

  • Game company X makes a game specifically for Windows and offers it on Steam to promote growth.
  • Steam applies Proton ( aka Wine ) to allow access to Linux.
  • Something breaks in the game for Windows users, the forums light up, and the code monkeys fix the issue ASAP, burning the midnight oil when needed.
  • Something breaks fails for the Linux users, they simply DON’T bother. They wait for a new version of Proton or Wine to work out the issue. It works for the majority of their users.
  • Codeweaver actually gets paid to work on fixing Wine/Proton issues, but they have to prioritize fixes. The vast majority of the people who code Wine do it for free as a hobby. So yeah… they will get right on that issue.
  • AFAIK all Steam does is pass off the issue on a “to do” list to Codeweavers.

Now this part is where you lose some Linux players. Eventually Wine gets updated but the people who don’t upgrade to that version still see a broken game until the old 1.9.4 launcher gets discontinued. They login to find no help, just garbage reports from WineHQ. I am currently running this and several other games on Wine version 9.16. This is the default distro for Manjaro.

Imagine a new Linux user accessing all sorts of online games without interruptions, then they see an advert for this game and cannot access it immediately. They might ask questions here, but they are more likely to move along.

Meanwhile, the game company passes the buck to Steam for not fixing Proton, Steam will likely state the fix is in the works, and Codeweavers will focus on the bigger issues with more popular titles. I know my solution would be simply to undo the change made between 1.9.4 and 1.10.0 launchers. It couldn’t have been that big of an update, since I don’t see any significant difference between the 1.9.4 and the current Window 10 Launcher. I test both on the same machine. I might not be testing this game much longer once the old 1.9.4 disappears.

I couldn’t find any accessible repos of manjaro to verify your claim of old wine packages. If the arch packages are used then wine 10.8 and 10.9 are available. 9.16 seems very odd.

The current wine development version on winehq is at 10.9. The new launcher got fixed in wine version 10.8 iirc.

@Power_Armor I am one of the “hobbyist” of Wine. In my spare time, I do my best to report issues and submit patches. I have several builds on many boxes both old and new.

I am currently running this on 9.16 means I am testing why something works on 9.16 and fails on the higher builds. The version came with the Manjaro and it requires the user to upgrade. Manjaro upgrades about every month but there are some who won’t install these updates for their own reasons.

Sorry if I confused you on my comments. I didn’t mean to make you doubt Manjaro, I am sure if I were testing a higher build the version of Wine would be higher. I use downgrade to test older builds and have found several apps marked garbage work better with the older Wine versions. However Eve Online is still a bit of a odd duck. The launcher, as you said, now works with Wine 10.8, I will take your word on that, but the client is not working as intended on builds higher than 9.16 when comparing it to Windows 10.

------Update 15th of June-----
I can confirm Manjaro 25 - as of this date - still offers 10.7 as the highest wine build available. Unless the user has knowledge in adding additional repositories, Eve Online won’t run as it did before. The good news is, Manjaro is a rolling build so it gets updates more frequent than LTS.

I doubt there is any Linux OS distros offering the newest wine build available. This means new Linux users will download Eve Online and it will fail to start up and most will uninstall it never to return. A few will come here and find the assistance they need.
