Honestly, I do. I think that being fearful of carrying large values of cargo makes the game a lot more fun and interesting. If there were no gankers, traders would make enormous amounts of money shuttling hundreds of billions around in AFK freighters to places where the sell prices are higher. The fact that you can lose a ship in a way that is completely your fault before you even undock is a fascinating concept that few other games I know have. If your ganking is profitable, have no restraint. That is why it exists. If ganking is to grief new players, then go get banned.
“Bleeding the game” is actually a good thing. It slows down power creep on large scales. Remember when titans were jokes and hyper rare (I don’t, I am a 2018 character)? Now, their construction costs have been raised because they are too abundant.
And also, ganking can be a great way to actually make friends. If you are a solo player, missing out on PvP and friends and only hanging in Highsec, getting ganked could expose you to people who actually want to help you improve your fits and fun. Only requirement? Don’t be salty.
I lose the isk war in 1v1 fights that I win pretty frequently. Most new players I kill in Faction Warfare with a crap fit that just wants to have fun gets their ship reimbursed fully plus some, then some fitting and skilling advice or even invitations to come fly with me. The joy that they will get out of the future fights they will have is well worth the 5 million isk and hour spent.
Ganking is a great way to make friends, because it exposes you to people who want to help you. LOL!
The word “could” here is very important.
I have been ganked, caught at gates, and fleet invite gamed many times, and a not insignificant (5%+) number of those losses have led to very good conversations with the aggressor.
When someone in Goons killed my mining industrial (I was a noob) with fleet invite, they gave me 10 million isk as reimbursement. That was huge for me, and was worth about a month of income at the time for me, since I was a slow climber of the learning curve.
When I lost my transport Hookbill to a lowsec smartbomb camp, worth over 105 million (it says 88 million, but the Polarized Launchers are each 7 million isk more expensive in Hek than Jita, where I ended up buying them from out of desperation, so I added the 21 mil as a surcharge), the Machariel campers responded to my chat invite and I got to learn a lot about them, their operation, and their vulnerabilities, just by being nice! (Turns out 4 machariels do about 13,000 EM alpha damage)
When I lost my rail atron to a Curse on a gate in the middle of random lowsec, he reimbursed it 2x. I don’t know why he did, but it was maybe because I complemented him on the setup. We ended up having a very nice discussion.
Being nice will open doors.
Most gankers and PvP people are the only ones who help the nubs.
You’re not reading well and you’re conflating multiple distinct issues and using them to construct a strawman. Nobody is claiming that PvP or ganking is bad. I distinctly, deliberately put bots and gate camping. I actually think in-space PvP is a little difficult as-is and should probably receive a buff to its ease or interaction. But I also think if you go around attacking ships you should draw PvE attention (not CONCORD) that you should have to deal with or avoid.
The idea that you can just sit on an interplanetary waygate and attack passersby is probably the most bizarre nonsense idea in the game. You could do that maybe twice before a waygate would become a literal warzone as planets mobilized defenses of some form. Having interplanetary trade disrupted by some weenie with a bunch of alpha clones doesn’t make a lot of sense and I wish they’d find a better way to make the game more interactive and less “have PvP modules or die”.
