There are several things:
1. Use the smallest cargo hold that will take the package:
This is a good general rule. Never over expand the cargo.
The total volume of that plastic wrap in your last kill was 2611.44 m^3. An unfit Nereus has a larger cargo than that. This fit, which can be flown by a Gallente alpha, aligns in 3.38 sec with good skills (not all alphas might have, so see suggestion 4 below) and more than enough cargo:
I’m not even saying that’s a good fit. It’s just quite easy to get the align time down to a point, where a bump ship will have difficulty getting an initial bump on you, and even then, the align time is low, so you have a good chance of escaping from bumping, even if you get suicide pointed and have to attempt to warp a second time. Bumping is a great tactic against capital size ships, but becomes progressively less useful the smaller the target ship is.
Your expanded Iteron V has an 11 second align time. That was never necessary
2. Gather intel before you even depart
You died in Uedama in that Iteron, one of the most notorious gank systems in the game.
Before you depart, you should quickly check:
- dotlan if you don’t know the route, to get the route from its route planner (Route Planner - DOTLAN :: EveMaps)
- Any system that is 0.7 or less sec status, check on zkillboard (https://zkillboard.com/)
- Check eve gatecamp (EVE - Check before you jump!) also linked above
- Also check dotlan’s most violet systems stats for the last 3 hours (Recent Statistics - DOTLAN :: EveMaps)
Those 4 things alone will give you a good heads up, even before you undock, whether you might be heading towards trouble.
Ideally, combine all of that into a single capabilty that allows you to easily check ganking activity (here is my webapp, that looks at Freighter level losses):
This one allows me to check any route, see potential suicide point ships in addition to any freighter size loss, and to set my in game standings towards characters before I even undock (eg. so my scout and webber can spot threats easily from local chat).
That provides convenience (because I haul a lot), but everything can be done quickly and manually, just from dotlan, zkillboard and gatecheck.
3. Have a scout or webber to assist (alt, or other player if alpha)
If you still want to undock after seeing trouble ahead, then either scout ahead +1-2 systems as you move, and definitely try to have a webbing alt if your align time is anything over 10 seconds.
Just doing that:
- fit cargo size appropriately
- minimise align time
- gather intel
- scout and web
Will save you nearly 100% of the time.
However, in the case where you can’t/don’t want to do that, then:
4. MWB/Cloak trick is your friend
Align, MWD, cloak…wait out the MWD cycle, delcoak and warp.
You can instawarp as soon as you uncloak and be safely in warp off the gate, without much chance of ever being stopped (it’s possible, but if you are good, very tough).
You do those things (even just MWD/Cloak trick) and you’ll rarely if ever get caught.
Flying Freighters and Jump Freighters every day in highsec, my alt has never lost a ship to a gank and never come close to being bumped, even with Machs waiting on gate.
