One of the issues I know that I have is that the overview tells you how far you are from an object, but not in what direction.
A column that included x/y axis angle and y/z axis angle relative to the way my ship is pointed on a scale of +/- 180 degrees would help tremendously. So, 34k 70/-135 would give distance and vector to the object.
Tactical overlay + target selection drawing a line between you and your target + moving camera around (either orbiting a particular object like your ship, or in free move) = no need for such things
