I have done a lot of things in EVE for the last few years but actually never used “Defender Launcher I” or “Defender Missiles”. I know them only from NPCs, where they have a chance to intercept incoming hostile missiles.
Now the description somehow confuses me, as it says in the description of the Defender Launcher that it can intercept incoming “threats” on command. The description of the Defender Missile however says that it tarets “incomin bombs”.
Do these Defender Missiles actually target only Bombs on activation or does it work like the NPC-Defenders that can eliminate incoming Torpedo/Cruise Missile Stacks as well?
When equiped on a command destroyer, they also intercept bombs from stealth bombers.
Before command destroyers I tested a two typhoons, one fit with 6x cruiser launchers and one fit with 6 defenders. After much non scientific testing, it seems that one would need 6 anti-typhoons to shoot down a single typhoon of cruise missiles.
If only there was a test server we could go to and figure this out.
The testing I did was prior to the 2016 change sorry. Suffice to say that performance was so bad we threw the concept in the bin, much like ‘grapnel vs webber’ with grapnel being so bad as to wonder wtf anyone would use a grapnel…
If you have a fleet with multiple destroyers it can be good practice to have the destroyer pilots in a chat channel where they organise and communicate the order of use of the defenders.
You don’t want to activate all five defenders for the first incoming bomb and then be out of defenders once the rest of the bombs land.
