Socket.Kill - V2

Hello

I have been told this is a thing to do so here goes,

Following continual arguing with CSS i got to the point where I was happy with the atmospheric effects that https://socketkill.com/ has, fusing the alien theme with eve online without taking away from actually being able to grasp what’s being presented (and avoiding the prospect of giving anyone seizures) but then I discovered I got a nomination for dev of the year, which inspired me to come up with an addition to the platform. As a result of further arguing with cloudflare the site now takes you to its very own ( nearly stateless) kill mails, at the moment its very much v0.1 - some iterations are desperately required but my hope is that you guys will enjoy something a little bit different. The aim is not pragmatism, I am opting for aesthetics

Further feedback and ideas welcome, or if you don’t care and want to continue using what you use, then that’s okay aswell.

Cheers

Dex

The front page was ok, the kill mail was hard to read after entire day at computer. A better font goes a long way.

Are you using aws lambda? It seems slow to start up.

The initial page could also have some kind of dashboard.

Idk about the green, I think it’s not a color to stare for long, I don’t remember which is the bad one, but green may not be a hit. You really want high contrast, and better UX (larger fonts, hierarchical sizes and positions), take a look at angular themes, those dudes have some nice color palettes.

The dark background is on point, but the foreground can’t be so dark, it tires the vision. UX, UX and UX. You don’t need to be good at UI design, but UX goes a long way.

Talking is cheap, so check these colors, use the ones you like. I’m also bad with UI, lol.

Just ideas, take the ones you like.

Colors, try to teach the user colors have meaning, they help identify what’s that information about.

Size, important stuff is bigger than details.

Hierarchy, players want to see the good stuff, surprise them showing the ISK on the title… ■■■■ conventions, why make them scroll? Most important info comes first.

Use the sides to optionals and navigations, down is always the lowest priority.

The easier to use, the most ppl will use it. EVE Tycoon is a good example. DAMN huge informational bar, good colors with high contrast.

Oh yeah the killmails themselves are no good right now - information is not very clear so something I am working on ( note the beta badge )

In terms of the main site, the aesthetic that i was aiming for demanded the dark and gloomy

The main site or the killmails?

Killmails, kinda hard to read. Very thin font.

Don’t go too crazy with the colors, that example is supposed to be a browser game, sites are more “sane”, I went crazy in that experiment.

The problem with all green, and I understood you aimed at the “old console theme” is that green is better for ISK values. It’s thematic for the player, using the user memory also helps with familiarity, so using what the player knows about EVE helps getting information with minimal friction.

Anyway, it’s your site, if you think you can make the all green work, go for it. At least give it more contrast.

If you asked about the slow, the main page, it takes some time to start showing the recent kms.

Ok, my last input. Gonna give you my take on the KM page. Take it as you like.

Move the aggressor below pilot, no need for the eyes to cross the page.

The ship image to the right, the image is just for show, you ain’t gonna do better than ingame DX12 3D renderer, no need to occupy the best space on the page. Up the wreck to the image space with the title ship - total isk - destroyed isk. Make the font bigger and maybe more weight on it.

Now the good stuff, I don’t know how the API sends you the data, but remember UX? Help the reader, use your knowledge about EVE to make the good stuff easier and more proeminent. Idk, maybe the modules that drop scaled to 1.1, order the drops first, or maybe break the common place and do it side by side, etc..

Good luck. Just ideas to get you rolling.
