Why does this matter? The issue is not whether d-scan should take up a module slot, it’s whether continuously clicking to keep something active is good design. And the same principles apply to anything you want to cycle as fast as possible. If it is important to have the opportunity to forget to activate one thing then it is just as important for other things.
Oh for ■■■■’s sake do I really have to explain it like you’re a 10 year old?
When you’re on grid with a bad guy, and you put a warp disruptor on him you are putting yourself at risk in hope of a reward. This is not comparable to gaining free information about enemies without having to risk or sacrifice or literally do anything. At least with the current system you have to push a button.
If you can’t see the difference between those two then we’re just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.
What does that have to do with auto-repeat? The risk/reward tradeoff is why warp disruptors require a module slot, use cap, etc, instead of just clicking “kill player” and preventing everyone in the system from warping away. Warp disruptors have auto-repeat because nothing is gained by having to click the button over and over again to keep it running. There is no choice involved without auto-repeat, you’re going to click it as soon as it cycles every single time. So, rather than require pointless clicking the game gives you an auto-repeat option so you can activate it once and keep it running until you want it to stop.
The same is true of d-scan. You are going to click the button as fast as possible and you’re never going to say “nah, I don’t want this information” in the situations where you have d-scan open at all. So, rather than require you to pointlessly click the button over and over and over and over and over and over and over again the game should just let you set it on auto-repeat until you tell it to stop scanning (for example, when you want to change the scan range). It doesn’t give you additional information about the ships on the scan. It doesn’t help you aim the scan to tell you what you want to know. It just saves you from the repetitive mindless clicking.
This is just plain good interface design, and I don’t know why you’re having so much trouble understanding it.
It’s clear that you and I have different ideas of what constitutes good design, so I’m gonna leave my responses at that as I don’t think we’re going to get anywhere further here.
@Bex_Dubroski Your wasting your time bro. Iv beaten that horse dead.
As a designer with experience, i can tell you this is a QOL (Quality of life) improvement for the game. Any normal AAA company would either swap it to toggle feature, or rework the way it works (or had insight with it to start).
Imo the inconsistent local thing in wh/non wh space needs to go. Its tacky. Imo, set all of eve to wh local design. It’d make the game more interesting.
All auto d-scan does is remove the requirement to constantly hit “V” (or whatever key you have your d-scan mapped to). Hitting “V” doesn’t mean you aren’t a carebear. It’s simply a poor design.
