The Great Character Review -- Bloodlines, Archetypes, and Unique Characters of EVE Online

Over the years I have been interested in the kind of characters you can make with EVE character creator and just how flexible it is or is not. It, of course, has its limitations, but you can create some rather unique characters with it if you set your mind to it. A lot of players will just go with what the EVE character creator spits out for them and do not really do that much ‘’character creation’’ at that stage. It can be understandable as a proper character creation can take 2-5 hours, give or take. So it all depends on how invested one is in making a more unique/interesting character. I hope to see more creative approach in this regard, and hopefully this thread will inspire (or not) players. In any case it will be a kind of a study on the characters of EVE.

I’ve saved up a number of well-made characters here and there over the years, and just generally been attentive when in local. I feel like it deserves its own topic.

This is not a thread about character portrait art (we already have a good one for that). Nor is this a racial lore thread. Nor how to use the character creator. Plenty of tutorials and info can already be found on the internet on those topics. This is more about looking into the uniqueness and commonness of characters of each bloodline in New Eden. To exhibit the variety possible. To understand the possibilities and maybe motivate players to create more unique characters for themselves.

Where have I looked up characters besides the ones I’ve saved over the years — Jita and Amarr locals are a great source for masses, then language channels, other locals, help channels, killboards, old corp/alliance mates, contracts. And a few from over here on the forums.

I am going to start with Gallente, Ni-Kunni, and Deteis bloodlines, as the former 2 are the races of my own characters. And I also have a bit of a personal interest for the Deteis. So these 3 will be the first I will deal with, but my goal is to treat all the races eventually.

As I analyze and post images for illustrating the races, I have excluded characters with masks or faces otherwise hidden and faces that are turned more than 45º away from the camera. Also, unfortunately, I will not be posting portraits with sunglasses on (unless they are sufficiently see-through). There are a lot of cool characters with sunglasses on (my own main included), but as it is, those things hide significant facial features. Face has to be clearly distinguishable and visible to more than 90%. I will not identify characters by name, and in the vast majority of cases I don’t know the name, as I just saved the portrait anonymously.

And as we all know – all rights to work/images portrayed belong to CCP.

PS. I will try to do this in a more comprehensive way, so it will take time till I’ve managed to cover all of the bloodlines of New Eden. I will progress as I get the time, as I’m not too involved with the game at this period in my life. I have work and life and relationships. But this is something that will also help me stay connected, I feel.

I want this to be more of a ‘character encyclopedia’ type of thing or a place where one can take a look and get a general idea about the way one bloodline looks, its extremes, and what can be done with any one race. Will see how it turns out.

The Deteis.

I will start with the Deteis race. They seem to be one of the most popular ones. I have polled Jita local while there, and they come up most populous along with the Gallente. If you randomly pull 100 characters from Jita, you’ll end up with about 20-25% Deteis. They are likewise rather common characters to find in Gallente space, but I find less so in Amarr.

I will not recount the whole backstory and lore for Deteis. Link to EVE Online lore on them will be at the bottom of the post. Their main characteristic is their sacrifice of the individual for the greater good of the whole. Females are said to be more lax on this than males. But it is maybe what stands out most about them from the lore-perspective.

As for the facial features/physiognomy, I can definitely see an archetype to the Deteis bloodline. A ‘classical’ representative of the race exists. Their common denominators seem to be a rectangular face shape, high-arching eyebrows, broad forehead, long straight nose, full lips, and a narrow rounded chin. Facial features are well-defined and ‘warm’. They are considerably ‘good-looking’, I would say, but that is highly subjective.

And then there are the untraditional characters — ones you would have a difficulty placing into the Deteis race at a first glance.

While their males are beautiful, Deteis females have very common looks. Their pursed lips and oblong faces along with aimless gaze staring straight ahead seem to repeat through by far the majority of the examples I’ve found.

There isn’t that much variability to their appearance, and while there is a clear archetype to the bloodline, characters with unclassical Deteis looks seem to be rare. Although as a couple of examples below show, there is potential to make something unexpected out of this bloodline too.

Deteis female characters are not as numerous as their males, but they’re still among the more popular female bloodlines along with Civire, Ni-Kunni, and Achura.

THE GALLENTE

The Gallente are one of the 2 most numerous races in EVE, along with Deteis. They are said to be individuals who love personal freedom above all else. That was the reason I picked them when I was making my first EVE characters back in 2009, when the current character creator didn’t exist. It was something I identified with, still do. And it might be what’s contributing to the huge popularity of the bloodline.

Males have some degree of variability, but most of them are still readily recognizable as Gallente. Only a very small number look so different from the archetype that you need to check their bloodline to be convinced they’re a Gallente. Archetypal Gallente have full fleshy lips, deep-set eyes, flat cheekbones, and a serious expression on their face. They seem to be brooding. Attractiveness is a hit and miss with this bloodline. Some of the most beautiful EVE characters can be found among the Gallente. Also some of the most unsightly.

Some Gallente men are highly charismatic and have a quality to them that draws you in. They seem bold and sure of themselves. They know what they want and they feel no qualms going after whatever it is they want. A lot of them embody self-made men who know what they’re doing.

Others look like complete dipshits. The types of guys who are gonna come bumming cigarettes from you even though you’ve told them you don’t smoke. They look like they just woke up and don’t quite understand where they are or what they’re supposed to be doing either.

Most Gallente fall somewhere in between these 2 extremes.

Gallente females are not as ubiquitous in the universe as Gallente males. They still have some variability to their looks and character, and I see more potential to them than what’s been done so far.

Female Gallente usually have a more distant air to them, and seem to be more private individuals. Most of them have a youthful appearance, but still seem smart and serious-minded.

Archetypal Gallente female has a pointed chin, straight nose, arching eyebrows, and fleshy lips. Eyes are set fairly apart and are often disengaged. They range from ‘soft’ looks to ‘rough’.

Khanidian women are known for their beauty and grace. They are also revered as warrior goddesses. While the men often stay planetside, farming and knitting, the women are generally experienced combat pilots.

THE NI-KUNNI

Ni-Kunni males are easily amused. They seem to be light-hearted guys, who don’t take themselves too seriously. They have a silly side. Sometimes they look absent-minded and lost in their own thoughts. Sometimes they’re fully in focus in the present. And sometimes they’re putting on a front for you.

Archetypal Ni-Kunni has a rectangular stocky face, prominent eyebrows, and high cheekbones. A lot of them have a cleft chin. Their lips have a downward curve giving their appearance overt seriousness, which dissipates as soon as a smile creeps up on their lips revealing their silly side within. Their looks are somewhat variable, and some of the characters of the bloodline can be difficult to place within the Ni-Kunni unless you check their race.

THE NI-KUNNI.
One of the more popular female bloodlines in New Eden. The female Ni-Kunni stand out with their natural looks and symmertical faces. Their appearance is surprisingly variable, there being a significant number of unclassical examples among them. However a lot of the potential with the race hasn’t been exploited yet. Most Ni-Kunni females look similar to one another and are easily recognizable just from their looks alone.

Archetypal female Ni-Kunni has a round face with a pointed chin. Lips are full on a small mouth. Nose is also small, and the eyes are set apart.

Ni-Kunni females are pretty easy-going and joyful. Like their males, they don’t take things too seriously. Some of them are very smart, others less bright, but they all have the street-smarts to get themselves out of whatever life throws at them. They don’t linger on past misfortunes, but look optimistically into the future.

The Ni-Kunni were bred over generations to be subservient and agreeable.

What a weird thing to say.

If you join E-Uni, you can take a class on EvE lore.

THE SEBIESTOR

Among the Minmatar, this is the most numerous bloodline, being easier to come across than either Vherokior or Brutor.

The Sebiestor bloodline is very variable. Archetypal Sebiestor has become a bit more difficult to define and there can be significant differences between the two individuals within the archetype. Males have long straight noses, and arching eyebrows. They often sport a pale anemic-looking complexion, looking like the undead. Faces range from triangular to rectangular to oval in shape, with a broad forehead, and a small mouth.

They look like young guys just venturing out into their own life and certain individuals have a nerdy appearance. Some of them you might take for a drug addict when first running into them, but that’s just appearances, and they may enjoy being underestimated.

Males are often heavily tattooed. Tomahawks are a popular hairstyle with this bloodline. They’re cunning, often preferring to accomplish their goals through subterfuge than hard work. Thus it doesn’t come as a surprise that there are small-time con men among them. With their taste for guile and all sorts of scheming they’re often not taken seriously. However, they shouldn’t be underestimated, as that surface can be deceptive.
