I claim “senselessly” but there may be a reason. If so, what is it?
No courtesy for those with no rep.
Maybe you should cite some dialog?
I will go out on a limb here and state the conversations are very dry and to the point. If you start any mission and quit, then they give you negative karma points. They normally refuse to talk to you after losing any standing with them. What I find messed up in the missions, is the lack of faction use. For example; if I were to be a Minmatar talking to an Amarrian agent, the agent should be very hostile, rude, and obnoxious toward me. The same would work for Galante and Caldari in those same roles. Same faction should have a more mellow discourse with each other.
Also there seems to be a lot of redundant missions. If you mine for any faction, the missions are identical to mining for pirate factions. There is never a pirate reason for the operation. It is just go kill ( insert number here ) of ( insert enemy target here ) and get ( insert reward here ). I have yet to come across any mission from any agent, I have found humorous, unique, or enduring.

Yeah, basically like @Posh_Wynoa_Spice said, no reputation (standing), no courtesy…
As your standing with the Agent, Corporation and Faction increases, your mission offers will get better, meaning more rewarding, less travel time and tailored more to your preference, such as more Pirate or Empire Faction encounters.
Also remember that this game was created over 20 years ago by a bunch of ̶g̶r̶i̶e̶f̶e̶r̶s gamers in Iceland…
The dialog for the distribution mission where you have to transport homeless people is kinda funny.
One called me a “stooge” without ever meeting before and without any evidence. Another began with “What do you want?” While direct it’s normally a dismissive tone people take when they don’t want to be bothered.
The standing at this agent was 1.7 but I think most of them I’ve seen recently are similarly rude.
I may have chuckled a bit, but Homeless People Everywhere is still just a one liner as far as jokes go.
I will never forget the quests like “Drakes on the Plain” in the original Guild Wars Nightfall. The reward was a Banana Scythe. To this day, I still pop on there for the Halloween quests, they are hilarious.

Well back in the day probably before you or me even knew video games existed this is what they liked in the 2000s
I agree (not the ‘griefers’ bit, of course!). If you know anything of Icelandic humour you’ll clearly see how it influenced the game, particularly in its early-middle development.
On Quora, one Icelander (Þorkell Arnar Egilsson) wrote of icelandic humour:
“It’s grim and barbaric but then again when living in a country with almost no resources except the roughest seas for putting food to the table or sheep farmings often right in the frequent volcanic eruptions what are your expectations for the humour?”
It’s hard not to see how certain elements of the game came to be. British humour has a similarly ‘cruel’ thrust, but seems to be less overtly harsh in its actual expression.
In EVE, this has all been toned down over the years, partly (I believe) as a response to changing attitudes towards offensive remarks, in general. If you want to keep your customers, don’t antagonise them, I guess.
Despite being at 10.0 standing with Agent Sistran Hednur, if I decline one of his L4 Security missions, I’m still called, basically, a p***y, Love it!
You’d be bitter too if you had to continually keep sending out rescuers for the Damsel.
that is totally unacceptable, and you should contact the corp’s HR department and lodge a complaint. Many corps have also repurposed the obsolete Captain’s Quarters into new “Crying Closets” where you can go and be alone and have a little cry until you feel better. IG channel “new player help” can put you in contact with experienced players who may be willing to give you a hug, as well.
As you gain rep, the agent will become more welcoming, this is what passed for humorous ‘immersion’ 20 years ago . enjoy .
Correct.
Are they rude or are they simply indifferent?
Ask anyone who’s spent any appreciable amount of time in Retail, being nice isn’t always free. There’s a mental toll to be paid for being nice in the fact of the ignorant public. That witty comment you just came up with? Yeah, it was funny the first four times we heard it. Four hundred times later, we have to force a laugh or you’ll call the manager and complain.
You’re one of thousands that walked in front of their desk asking for a favor. Expect to be treated as such.
Stop your nonsense and get back to work, Scoundrel!
Thanks for the PTSD flashbacks.
… don’t you love the ones who start walking backwards and not looking where they’re going then they bump into you, turn round as if they’re about to apologise then they see your name badge and realise they don’t have to? My personal favourite.
Glad I don’t do that anymore!
I started asking at job interviews if the position has me interacting with customers. If the answer is yes, my answer is no.
I have zero tolerance for stupid anymore, so I completely understand where the Agents in EvE are coming from.
The agents treat everyone the exact way the person warrants it.
Nope that’s what passed for immersion back then lol. Buggs hit it right on the head.
And you allow the words of non-existent characters to impact your feelings?
Wow. Just wow.
The truth hurts, as they say. Maybe he gets treated like an unwashed space peasant because he is one. (According to the game’s lore and roleplay ofc.)
