5 pirates in hi sec

Nope, both the FOB mechanic and the NPC mining fleets have been around for a couple of years.

Guess I need to re-read the thread again, thought it was scouts for the new advanced Triglavian Invasion content.

We’re assuming FOB rats because the OP says that they were Guristas.

In the killmail that was provided the rats are listed as Kestrels belonging to Guristas Production.

Thread title always makes think that it’s a start of long joke along the line of a “a priest, a minister, and a rabbi go into high sec”…

Is that a joke that involves a bear and ends with “Looking back on it, circumcision may not have been the best way to start”?

Yes, although I think you cut the end a bit short there.

lol you punning linguist.

Ok, so 5 missile frigates.

Must be something new because my experience with FOB Guristas rats was completely different.

While piloting a Prospect in an active FOB system, I warped to a belt that had their Mining Fleet, Retrievers I think, which started warping out when I landed on grid while a mixed fleet of about a dozen attack ships warped in and started targeting me.

It was all fairly quick, everything happened within a couple of minutes. I had warped to 100km range and was checking the overview to see what type of mining ships they were when the Mining Fleet started warping out with the Attack Response Fleet warping in causing me to warp out.

I’ve seen the FOB pirates in 5 man frigate wings orbiting player structures, as well as main stations. Never seen them in a belt, but wouldn’t put it past CCP to modify spawn rates and locations…after all, in this Era of Chaos, a simple modification of code creates a whole new experience, intentional or not.

Ahhh, ok, sounds about right, I definitely wouldn’t bet against it.

Don’t get me wrong, if I had to choose between having new character spawn systems next to an invasion or not next to now, I’d choose the latter.

My general point is that while not ideal, this is part of EVE and new players or not, we’re blasted to hell on occasion by the unexpected. Better early on to learn that lesson when flying a free ship rather than an Orca…

Any how…no need to reply…

By all accounts they’re programmed to be aggressive, and not just towards players.

There’s a couple of links in this thread that detail an incident where a bunch of NPC miners encountered some FOB rats that they had negative standings to, things escalated and the support fleets beat the hell out of each other; until some Drifters poked their noses in, both support fleets turned on the Drifters because everybody hates Drifters.

There’s conflicting information on who won, one says that the Drifters killed them all, the other says the FOB rats killed them all.

The AI wars have begun, and it was completely unintended AFAIK.

I would dare say there are few games with the complexity & sheer number of gameplay elements like EVE. How do you propose that every possible nuance of the game is brought to the players attention? No one would sit through a tutorial like that.

When I started there wasn’t even a tutorial, it was here’s a ship, work it out. I’m not saying that’s the best solution any more, but there has to be some initiative from the player. The Agency exists, and it’s in your face when you login unless you specifically turn it off.

And if you die - instead of complaining, why not ask yourself, or the community what/why/where and how to prevent it? So many games now adopt a hand holding style, providing instant gratification for the player. Why shouldn’t some games be difficult. This game has so many excellent external resources, I think it’s rare intthe gaming world.

EVE has never been a mainstream game and while I would love for player numbers to be up - if that means changing the game to something that hands you everything on a plate, I won’t bother with it any more.

It reminds me of the Tamarian language from the ST TNG episode Darmok.

I translate it as “incapability to play EVE on easy mode”

Ah, yes “Darmok, when the Orca fell.”
Like this thread, it left me baffled, but entertained.

Top 5 Orca pilot mistakes that I have seen:

1: Mining AFK. With Triglavians running around, they will kill an Orca before you know it.

2: Failing to check if there is a FOB in system. If there is, mine somewhere else, preferably a few systems away.

3: Failing to check D-Scan. Always check D-scan before starting a mining op. If you see any rats with diamonds in front of them, find another system to mine.

4: Failing to properly tank. Orcas have quite a large shield but only 5 mid slots. Orcas can be cap stable with 3x adaptive invulnerability fields operating. Personally I think 2 is enough.

5: Failing to equip a 500mn MWD. If you need to run, click on the location, hit the warp to button, bump the MWD for a single cycle and in ~10 seconds your in warp. Otherwise your looking at 30-40 seconds.

6: Failing to pack enough firepower. If you need (or want to try) to fight Triglavian recons then pack light combat drones and lots of them since they will quickly get chewed up. I recommend 15 T1 Hobgoblins and 10 T2’s for emergencies. A drone navigation computer II will also help to speed them up and apply damage.

An Orca’s base tank is mainly in structure, 45k structure vs 30k shield.

By all means use the mids for shield mods, but IMHO a magic suitcase and bulkheads in combination with the mids is a better bet.

How do you know they were pirates? Did they say “Yarrrrr!” ?
