AI SLOP POLL

We can all agree on one thing. All the examples given sure look like they were generated with AI and hey, if you like the taste of slop then you like the taste of slop.

Well done Sherlock. Did the giant glowing deep-space planet or the spaceships tip you off, sweetie?

Come now. There are decades and decades of sci fi art with glowing planets and spaceships that don’t look AI generated. You are too smart to make a point that weak.

Nah, there’s just a general veneer that all AI generated images have. Like they all came from the very bottom of the uncanny valley.

It actually takes a lot of practice to create AI prompts that produce that level of detail, texture, and colour. Very often the exact wording, and the order of the wording, makes all the difference.

The irony is that on the art forums, when I look at the art of the ‘real artists’ who decry AI art…more often than not their own art is barely beyond kindergarten level. Its not like these people are themselves budding Michaelangelos or Van Goghs. I think a lot of it is sour grapes that they’ve barely progressed beyond kindergarten level in 10 years and along comes someone who can produce way better with an AI prompt.

Dude, really.

Youre ticking me off…and it takes a lot to do that. If you cant appreciate any art in any form…then you have no right to say that certain ways of expression are not allowed. You sir are just a hard nosed philistine to the highest degree.

I hope you dont share these opinions with people on a higher level than you…well never mind..people of a higher level wont give you the respect or the time.

How about a challenge for you. Lets see some of your art so you have a foot to stand on. Show us what you can do if you think all forms of expression are not of you liking. Show us those brilliant stick figures that you love so much. Please share them so i may relish and appreciate your art like i do others.

Youve been challenged. Put up or stfu.

You have drastically misunderstood me. I am a deep appreciator of art, that is precisely why I think that AI generated art is a complete waste of time. I believe that art is intensely valuable and that AI generated art completely undermines the endeavor.

Now I never said that I was a visual artist, I’m a musician and I fully believe that AI generated music is an even bigger waste of time than pictures but if you want a stick figure, well, here ya go. I don’t own a winery but I can have an opinion about wines, same thing with art.

Anyone that appreciates anything should also appreciate anything that may not fit their fortay. You use wine as an example…you dont like a certain wine so instead of giving a constructive opinion about it you just say “on this is trash.” Sorry my dude, nobody is going to respect that.

You dont have to like something all you want…but you cant just say, well do it that way but the other way sucks arse…you are trash. Come on sir, you can be better than that.

You claim youre a deep appreciator of art. I say youre full of it. If you were so deeply into art as you claim then you would have an appreciation of all art and have constructive opinions of the parts you may not agree with. To call somebodys art “trash” because it was done in a way you dont agree with is just what it is…■■■■■■■■.

Im guessing youre young and need more seat time on this planet.

I love this debate, honestly.

I think of AI as a tool, a thieving tool (while it is learning) the same way art student would replicate masters works to learn the techniques. But it the same protest one might have towards a camera and photography. ‘You didn’t paint that, you just took a picture’

My wife and I have this discussion often and enjoy the back and forth. Can a tool be used to make art? Heck, that would be like painting with a palette knife. Musical artists who ‘sample’. Art or plagiarism?

I am proud of my particular stick figure art, sometime over beers I will tell you about that story.

As I said. I enjoy this thread

thank you

Indeed…in fact the exact same argument did occur when photography began, and ‘proper artists’ did not regard it as an art form.

And think of all those scribes with their beautiful flowing swirls who were put out of work by the printing press. I mean how dare people mass produce text !

And textile machinery. The automated loom replaced years of skilled work. It was the very first example of punch cards being used to automate stuff.

Same as it ever was. Today’s Luddites happily buy the morning paper and factory created carpets…and now whine about AI art.

What does the level of advancement have to do with anything? An effort made by a human, no matter how ‘‘primitive’’ is genuine and meaningful. It doesn’t have to be museum quality to be enjoyable. And it’s always authentic.

The only thing AI does is speed up the process. Where previously one may have taken days if not months to produce certain visuals, you can now do it in seconds. It doesn’t make it more valuable. Mass production is precisely the opposite of art.

Those swirls of individual handwriting in fact was an art form in itself. Unlike the mass-produced machine type font which is definitely no art. And the proper analogy is not just using a new tool. Those who started using the printing press did not have thousands of scribes write the text for them, then jumble up the words, and pass it off as their own ‘‘work’’. They got a new tool that did things faster (without achieving its results through intellectual theft) but lost the artistic quality of it in the process. Quality was sacrificed for speed. Which is the same for AI content, but whether it’s really worth it, like it was with the printing press, is debatable.

I hate it when Alexa regurgitates the internet in my house,

it is a real mess to clean up.

First, I want to say, OP your poll is bias, every answer has some kind of a caveat to them. When you make a poll you shouldn’t have answers like "Yes, however… " and “No, but…”. That is why I didn’t bother with your poll.

I read this and thought, I remember only a few years ago, I was using the GIMP ( open source photoshop program ) to make art. I wasn’t using other photos at all. I started with a blank canvas and use the GIMP to make an image. I will get online later and post some examples. Getting ready to head out.

Today people would look at the art I made with the GIMP and think it is AI generated. One time I was at a Comic con and this guy, who was using an electric tablet and stylus, told me I wasn’t making true art, because you need to pen it on the screen… I didn’t take much offense, but I also didn’t buy his comic he was selling.

When Stephenson, et al. invented heat engines and the railway, the Institute of Civil Engineers called them ‘tinkerers’ and refused to allow them membership as it wasn’t ‘proper’ engineering, thus they formed the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, so it’s not just artists caught up in this nonsense.

I think you need to read up more on the followers of Ned Ludd. They were never against progress, they just wanted the progress to benefit them, as workers, make their work easier and allow them to make better things faster. What they were against, was machines being used to make money for the bosses, and very little has changed since 1779. We still need to stop the machines being used to line the pockets of the billionaires.

That’s always a bogus argument, as all art is ultimately ‘intellectual theft’. Every great artist has learned and thus copied earlier styles and works. Leonardo Da Vinci had many students, all copying earlier works…and Leonardo himself learned the same way.

Show me a great painter who has never seen a painting. Show me a great author who has never read a book. All art is ultimately based on plagiarism. People take all that has gone before and generate something new out of it…so it is hypocritical to single out AI art for this.

Except AI doesn’t have a conscience.

How much ‘conscience’ does it require to swing a bag of paint with a hole in it back and forth across a canvass and have people fawning and paying $millions for something a kindergarten kid could create ? How much ‘conscience’ does it require to sell a watch for $100,000 that looks ( and works ) identical to one I bought for $20 ? Where’s the ‘conscience’ that made this worth $4.3 million ???

Someone hasn’t had their cup of Java this morning…

you can tell the boomers have been fed the scary word AI, because that’s all they fear monger about these days, stop whining about AI and move on boomers, you don’t speak for all of us
