Allow ALPHA players to pay for the game!

You can buy a cheap weekend pass and be full Omega for 3 days whenever you have time to play.

That pass can be used on any 3 consecutive days of the week, not just the weekend.

There are two problems with that….

  1. What a subscription is actually paying for is 24/7 availability. Keeping the servers running 24/7 whether you use them or not. Subscribers collectively all do this. And the clincher is…that brings in a specific amount every month that keeps the servers going. Any fee that gave hourly access, or access to specific Omega items, would have to bring in the same amount of money….because the servers would still be running 24/7. So in other words the hourly fee would have to be pro rata the equivalent of the current subscription fee per month anyway in order for the same overall income for CCP.

  2. If people are allowed to pay only for the bits they like, then the less popular parts of EVE will simply die out as unprofitable. The current subscription method pays for wormholes, for example. I never do wormholes, but I am happy to pay for them to exist…because their existence enhances the game. If they were a pay feature then they’d become unprofitable if less people used them….and all the less used bits of EVE would wither away and die. It is the huge diversity of EVE that subscriptions are ultimately paying for.

Every subscription is paying for the entire universe to exist, not just the bits individuals are interested in. That is the point that so many on this thread miss.

If they want to pay for the bits they like at 5 times the cost I pay for everything, I’m happy to let them do it.

If it costs me $20 a month for everything and it costs them $100 a month for just what they want at the time, let them. PvP rules still apply. They’ll lose way more than I will in a fight. I’m good with that.

They pay for all those tokens to get a Nightmare loaded with Large T2 laser beams and I blow it up with my Kronos, They have to spend all of those tokens to get another one. It’d be funny!

The key here is to make Alpha players spend MORE than Omega players.

  • Charge by the ship- a ship they’ll likely lose in PvP.
  • Charge by the fit and ammo- things they’ll lose to PvP
  • Charge by the structure- a structure that WILL get destroyed.

See? CCP can make a fortune!

Me too. But I think that what these people are looking for is something that is pro rata cheaper than the equivalent full subscription rate. Sort of like going to the supermarket and expecting to buy a 100g bottle of ketchup at 1/10 of the price of a 500g bottle…..when really the price per unit is generally the reverse of that.

Supermarkets apply exactly the principle you are talking about. You only want a 100g bottle ? Then you pay double the price per litre of the big bottle.

But that still doesn’t get round the problem of less popular items fading away. They stopped selling my favourite sandwich paste…because not enough people were buying it. The same would happen in EVE.

Doesn’t mean CCP has to give it to them

I know everyone’s situation is different, but I can’t really relate to this. If I have a hobby I’m sinking 30-60 hours per month into, I’m probably willing to spend a couple bucks on it. You spend as much or more just going to see a movie in the theater.

Sorry Gerard, goofy Discourse reply threading.

No wonder you’re always asking for money, if you pay US$7 for coffee of course you’re always broke.

It keeps the tourists away.

Cheapest I see Maxwell House in that size at Walmart is almost $20, you sure it’s the right brand you are talking about?

Due to saturation my brain tells me the seller of such an item should lower the price over time as interest drops, which is the inverse of economic reality as everything becomes more expensive, including it’s ingredients. At some point even you are done with that same old sandwich, either because the price was increased, the quality dropped, or you just got plain bored of it. In my country, the entire fast food industry is now collapsing for the same reason.

Someone gave me 8 free caps. It does happen

Fitted
