There’s a reason why criminal gameplay and weapons like smart bombs are locked behind the red safety switch for Alphas: you’d end up with thousands of disposable smart bombing/catalyst gate camps all over high-sec with no recourse or consequences.
Alpha in itself wasn’t a bad idea, they just went about implementing it the wrong way. Alphas should have been on a separate server with something like 20 systems. Just enough to get a feel for the game and learn the ropes and decide whether or not you want to purchase an Omega sub and play on the actual live server.
No, the smart move was creating Alpha state when numbers had crashed from their absolute peak of 60k (which was only a few short periods, more like 50k average) down to 30k in 2016 and were dropping like a rock.
Alpha state pulled EVE out of the death spiral it was heading for and brought numbers up to the point where they could sell the company and stay alive.
Alpha’s the only thing that’s kept EVE viable since 2016, folks. You can stop complaining about it now.
