Anybody else having issues with Steam and the Beta Launcher?

It was working fine untill this morning, and a launcher update arrived, and I had to get off, so when I got back… I cant run the EVE Launcher anymore. It will start and then stop and back to the green play button on Steam.

Ubuntu Mate 20.04.6 LTS
Ryzen7 5700
Amd RX 480 4GB

I was running 6 omegas just yesterday night.. no idea what else may have changed aside of the launcher update.

Adara

I’m having issues too. Same situation: I could start the launcher and play the game this afternoon, but the update that was downloaded then changed something to the launcher.

I’m not playing via Steam but via Lutris. I had been using its Wine 8 runner. Wine-staging 10.4 results in some JavaScript error.

By switching the runner to “GE-Proton (Latest)” I can get the launcher and game to start again, but I lost some settings by going from Wine to Proton (they manage their prefixes differently). Performance seems good, though.

Edit:
I also have an AMD GPU in this system btw. It’s an old though, a R7 270

Edit 2:
I’m having a new graphical glitch with Proton where explosions and smoke are sometimes solid colored squares. Broken graphics in EVE aren’t uncommon on this setup with this old GPU so I’ll just have to live with this.

Also on lutris, and had the same issue. Was actually about to post it. Logged in early in the morning USTZ East, was able to log in. Now, launcher doesn’t start.

For the record, I also use an AMD GPU.

It definitely was something related to the launcher update, as I observed the same behavior as you. I rolled back to earlier versions kernel and amd graphics firmware, and it didn’t work.

Once I rolled back to an earlier launcher, it worked well until the launcher did it’s updated.

I may have to start playing eve on Steam, or mess up my settings using Proton? Will test later in the evening.

Is this really still the ‘Beta’ Launcher? I’ve been running it since the beginning just fine. Confirm completely dead. I regret clicking yaya to the ‘an update to the launcher is available’.

Was using proton GE 9-20. Nope.
Proton experimental. Nope.
Proton 9.0-4. 8, 7, Nope.
GE 9-26 and GE 9-27 Nope.

Too bad they don’t use the steam betas thing. Would be nice to be able to just tick off the beta and go back to a prior version.

Have you tried blowing in the cartridge and reinserting it?

I’ve had this a few times in the past on different machines. Unfortunately i don’t know how to fix this with steam, so you have to figure that out yourself.

When it happens on wine, i just fetch the latest eve online installer from the website and install it. This will just reinstall the launcher as it finds all relevant data from the old installation. Then it works again.

Yeah in steam you just hit manage - uninstall or remove or whatever. Then click install.
Launcher downloads, seems to run fine …
The only problem is that even though it never deleted the files in the first place, the launcher is stupid and continues to download all 32gigs all over, start from scratch, no profiles, no window settings…very annoying.

I bit the bullet and moved to ge-proton on lutris version 0.5.18. Had to re-log to all my toons. But it’s working.

I don’t think I’m on the beta version. I’m on launcher version 1.9.2 right now.

Thanks, this fixed my issue too.

Had the same issue, switching to GE-Proton seems to bring the launcher back. Lost some settings but was able to restore them. HOWEVER, I now have no audio in EVE at all with the ALSA driver. Pulse works but that is terrible for multiboxing.

Ah, that sucks.

FWIW, I never had issues with audio once I had a cleanly installed pulse or pipewire setup.

A year or so ago, I had issues, but it was mostly because I was useing pipewire with pulseaudio things still lingering in the background… Or was it the other way around? Either way, it was a package mismanagement on my end that caused my issue.

GL! Hope you fix the Audio issue!

Im on Steam so no, it shouldnt work.

Its the Beta Launcher for Steam, not the old old Beta Launcher… it was said that we could only play EVE if we updated via the Beta option, we had to input a code and that would let us get the Beta Launcher on Steam. I have no idea if a normal launcher release will work…

Im on STEAM.. using Proton 8.0-5.. I dont have GE-Proton available here, but theres the 9.0 option and also Hotfix (no idea what it does) and Experimental. I guess I’ll have to try each? the bad part is that it needs to recompile/download something that takes kinda forever, but I’ll try and report back.

Update: Doing it with 9.0… and I have a launcher and its updating something… we’ll see. It’s working. Im sure I’ll run with some of the issues that made me rollback to 8.0 but right now its working. My alpha account thats using the Steam ID was recognized and didnt lose any overview settings… not sure if that will translate with the other 6 omegas… we’ll see.

Update2: Its working. I added the omegas and from the launcher I could still see their profiles, so I assigned those before login and they are exactly like they were. I’ll have to check later if there are any graphic weirdness, but so far its working.

Upgrade To Proton 9-27 .. after this upgrade the local lutris installation works ike charm again, faster than before. Can’t wait for Kernel 6.14 and the performance boost for wine .. mu har har..

If audio wasn’t working at all I’d do that, but it still works with Pulseaudio selected. I’ve reached a compromise by adding this enviroment variable: PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC = 60 , seems to fix most of the crackling/distortion issues.

In addition DX12 works again with the latest GE-Proton, so everything back in working order again

Reinstalling obviously works; I got a message back from a GM to clear the launcher cache files.
God forbid a cache just not be a hard dependency of launching.

His instructions were somewhat poor and assumed windows paths naturally…
open up appdata/Eve Online/ and delete everything except Logs and state.json.

I guess you could try a variation of this depending on how your steam builds its folders (8500 is eve):
/home/xxxuserxxx/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/compatdata/8500/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/EVE Online
