It really depends. If I am in a shuttle, no problem, auto-pilot the whole way. If my cargo hold is empty, no problem, auto-pilot again. If I am flying an expensive ship or I have anything worth more than 50 million in the cargo hold, I am not using auto-pilot.
In my early years, I was moving stuff in high-sec while cleaning the house. My hauler got locked and ganked when coming through a gate. I did not realize I had a few blueprints in the hold, along with the other junk.
Some folks get bored of gate camping and will try and cost a dude as much as possible by blowing up a nice unfitted ship auto-piloting through. Others will scan your hold and look for a specific dollar amount like 50 million to make the gank profitable.
If you have something you don’t want to lose, don’t auto-pilot it. Simple!
