I like using the tactical overlay because it makes ranges and movement so much easier to see, but frequently I wish I could tilt or change its angle on the fly. For example, if I warp into a combat site and the rats are at range but all “above” the plane made by the tactical overlay, I would like to shift the angle of the plane putting me and the rats all on the same “level”.
The tactical plane is a fixed imaginary flat area in space around your ship, it isn’t something you can move or bend or manipulate, it exists in your ship’s A.I to give you the pilot more information about the space around you.
True. However NASA uses Earth as a source for all their spacecraft to navigate. It could get even more “messy” using the systems in place at NASA. It is a fictional universe and the developer can just make shi… stuff up, to appease the Trekkies in the audience. Don’t make me hit you with a Heisenberg Compensator!
It seems it hasn’t occurred to you yet that a plane like you ask for could be mathematically impossible depending on the distribution of the objects?
What you are actually asking for is an artificially “dumbed down” view that ignores the Z dimension if the base plane would be in X/Y. Something like the new 2D mode of the map, but without loss of distance information.
But maybe you are also using it wrong? After activating tactical overlay you can additionally activate the tactical camera. And this enables you to turn the view, pan around and see the distance projection from above, all detached from your ship…
