Different Defense in simulation and in "reality"

I’m trying to fit Venture. In simulation it looked like Compact Thermal Shield Hardener in Mid Slot improve Defense. I put it there, but Defense did not changed. It’s Online, CPU, Power Grid, Capacitor is ok, no warning that the Shield Hardener can’t be used. When I switch to Simulation, Defense get higher. When I close Fitting window and open again, it’s the same. What I do wrong?

Oh, I see. It’s necessary to switch it on during flight.
